freedom from spam
« on: January 31, 2010, 08:58:30 pm »

Noisy neighbors with barking dogs, popup advertisements in websites. emails from nigeria about a small favor.  advertisements in my mailbox for things I don't care about.

It seems that there is a common theme here but I'm having trouble defining it.  The emotion I have is that I should be able to go about my business without having to deal with outside junk disrupting my thoughts.

Try NoScript. It'll block everything you don't specifically allow. It gets annoying sometimes but I haven't had a popup in years.

Adblock, a clean gmail, and an mp3 player and some nice headphones (I got a decent pair of Sony ones, only $40, and they've worked for several years).

I don't really mind spam. Most half-decent email providers block them. Ads are annoying though. The new spam is the Facebook apps forcing their players to advertise.

I was wondering if peace and quiet/freedom from spam is a human right like privacy is.  Because it gives the same feeling when it is violated.

Suits me if it prevents more people from thinking that Facebook is meant to be used for playing Mafia Wars.

Goddamn applications cluttering up the feeds.

At least there are already plenty of software to deal with spam.

Telemarketing is the real problem here.
