I just tap a section to use for my forges, and fortify that off so the imps/magmamen can't get through. I never really thought about it, as I never had any problems with them. Still, I suppose killing them would be fun for once.

Depends exactly where the pipe is and what creatures are in it.

If the pipe is in an out-of-the-way area then I'm happy to just leave it be, and perhaps wall it off somewhere down the line so that fire imps won't decide to chase immigrants, caravans or wild animals and set a large area of grassland on fire. Depending on how things go, I may decide I can put them to good use in one way or another, so if they're not posing an immediate threat to me I'm happy to leave them alone.

If it's nearby and the creatures could be a nuisance to me, I'll just draft my starting seven and station the seven untrained wrestlers near the pipe (two or three tiles from the edge - not right next to it as they seem to have a higher risk of falling into the magma if they're that close). If there are only fire imps, I'd easily expect no casualties whatsoever. If there's a fireman that wants to come out and see what's going on, I'd probably lose one to three dwarves before it gets killed, and I have to remember to forbid their burning corpses and items so I don't end up losing the rest to Dwarven Stupidity™. But get up close and imps are a piece of piss. Fact.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Quietust: how did you prevent the cave-in from killing the magma flow tiles on the bottom z-level?

I either cage them or kill them before they reach the forges.
I have modded in the ability to cast steel/iron mechanisms, so I can just place several weapon traps filled with steel weapons in the magma-tunnel, which will eviscerate any flaming creature straying too far in.

Collapse the cap if the tube has one.
Alternatively, drain the entire magma tube and let them fall.

Other.
Same method I would use. Similar can be done with bottomless pits.

If the pipe isn't open to air, I just ignore them and tap the magma through fortifications. If it is, I'll usually channel around the pipe or wall it in (with draftees protecting the miners), whichever's more convenient.

If I bring a hunter, he gets some marksman training by patrolling round the pipe with a couple of dogs. If not, I usually leave them be until I have very skilled miners; I believe they use the mining skill when attacking with picks?  Or perhaps it's just the stat gains, because novice miners are usually toast.

If they hide and don't come out for some years I'll usually drain the pipe and pick them off with marksdwarfs from a higher level.  One time I had an amusing problem as I was trying to drain magma off the map through a fortification... it doesn't.

Magma critters are too rare and special for me to kill. If I don't cage imps for misc. later use I feel like I'm missing out on potential fun.

My imps tend to be somewhat antisocial.

If they do decide to say hi, then...

I am still trying to make fire imp pillboxes, pesky things won't fire more than a few squares behind fortifications.

Er, I didn't? Cave-ins don't kill the magma flow tiles.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I don't usually play maps with magma. But last time I did, seems to me the imps managed to die off on their own without any specifc action on my part. It's pretty normal for me to end up with 25% or more of my fortress in the military, but I don't usually start any metalworking industry for the first year or two, so presumably the imps got bored and wandered into a patrol of half a dozen or so champions.
