I like dark grey for my fortresses, so slate is a favorite, among others. Obsidian is nice when I can get it, but it feels a bit decadent to me.

For some reason I also have a fondness for siltstone, maybe because it's so smooth IRL.

I have this strange nack for digging down right into olivine, and I am quite glad about this. Gabbro is alright, but I go quickly to gneiss for building.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Limestone. Contains tons of iron (At least in my experience). And has the classing grey look. Perfect for my aboveground castles.
What he said. Marble's nice too, even if it does leave a bit to be desired orewise.

I would say chalk, because I never run out of steel with it, but the truth is it makes the game pretty boring, even with civforge.
Other than that,definently obsidian.

Granite, because it has pitchblende.

I coat my noble's rooms with it.

Also gabbro, because it has kimberlite, which has a pretty blue color.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

Obsidian. Whatever it is that I build above-ground, it looks even more magnificent, decadent, and so, dwarvenly, when made of obsidian.
What cooler thing is there to have goblins rush into a castle made of obsidian, then to be obliterated by weapon traps filled with obsidian shortswords? - Nothing.

gold, silver and platinum. And before you yell at me, my game is modded to the point of

REDUNKULUS

or gabbro, because I like the name.

LOL

Whats the difference between chert and flint...?

Flint is a type of chert, yes, but flint is more commonly found in sedimentary layers, like chalk and limestone.

I don't know exactly how it is set up in game, but both should occur as large, ovoid clusters.

Although not technically a rock, I really like jet (I'm not sure why DF doesn't treat jet like a gemstone instead of rock). I like to imagine my fortresses made of polished black jet, looking something like the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I love jet, actually, for the RL imagery. It's too rare to rely on, though, so I don't end up with much built into it.

Marble's my favorite. It's got a very interesting look when polished, with veins and varied colorful patterns. Sometimes fossils. It's useful as a flux, too. The only downside is the lack of magnetite - limestone is second-best because of that. Granite is nice when marble and limestone isn't available, it's a good strong rock. I prefer basalt over obsidian when I want an "evil fort of doom" look - black but not glossy.

I don't like "soft" rock. Chalk, talc, mudstone, conglomerate, puddingstone, and so forth, is wretched glop as far as I'm concerned. I'd dig in chalk purely for the flux and ore, the rest I throw away when I have to dig through it to get to better stuff. It's not even fit for making crafts to sell to elves. For some reason I'm not fond of gabbro either, purely because of its name I think. It just sounds unpleasant.

One of my favorite forts had a massive above-ground keep made out of flint and steel, and the living areas were carved into marble underground. I like to imagine my military dwarves charging out to battle with steel boots on the flint-paved courtyard. Don't normally use flint for construction otherwise.
