"My fellow Vidal! Today is a day of sadness. The peace in our Kingdom was disturbed, brutally. While we suffered little casualties, I know many of you are thinking of striking back against our foes once possible. And you know that we are planning on armed forces... but we will not use them to attack." King Usata raised his hands as the murmurs in the crowd began to rise.

"We will use them to defend ourselves, yes. We need to, there is no question about that! There is no doubt that the raiders kept us alive because they plan to return, so we shall be ready for them when the time comes. If we are strong enough by that time, we might strike back even. But we won't be ready for a retaliation strike for a long time, and if we strike then against the village the raiders presumably came from, it wouldn't be a retaliation strike. It would be petty vengeance, fueled by hatred. You might not care about that distinction now. And I must admit that my first thoughts were bloody as well. But to survive in these trying times, we must keep the future within our sight. Looking through bloodied eyes will only leave us blind."

--------- A few days later

"So Sanish, what is your usual task in the city?" Awenshen asked the Vidal sitting in the throne room waiting for the king. "I catch fish, with simple hunting spears. Nothing like the king has asked to create. I don't think..." - "Well, the king does. So do Weshol and I. As well as a few people who claim to have seen you. You were one of the few who managed to fight against a raider. You will at least train with the new warriors. I wouldn't be surprised to see you become their leader." Sanish nodded his head in disagreement. "Leader? I have no idea how to lead!"

"Neither did I when I became king." Usata II said as he entered the throne room. "But I'd like to think that I'm doing a few things correctly now. You'll have some luxuries that I won't have, however. You'll only lead a few handful Vidal, and you'll be able to step back down if you don't learn to lead well."

---------

Weshol looked at the training warriors as he went to join his fellow sages in the halls of learning, to discuss the issues of constructing larger buildings on the less that forgiving wetlands. Most of the buildings in Gusha were low and light, but low and light would not do for food storage. On the plus side, if they solved the problem for the food storage, they might open up other constructions that would benefit from being large and tall. A few of the warriors Weshol passed stuck their training weapons into the ground to rest for a bit, and he wondered idly just how deep a large pole could be driven to be stable...

Botanos was taking a stroll through the streets of Harisha, and stopped when he saw a family with something on their back that could have at one point been called clothes.
"Why do you not wearing proper clothes?" he asked
"There have been no clothes made for us, so we just try to get by."
Botanos looked down and shook his head in dismay. What kind of proper empire had a population without clothes? When had times become so hard?
So he decided that rebuilding the empire should begin with the people.
It should also begin with protecting the people with walls to not only give them the comfort of knowing they can sleep safely at night without risk of bandits, but to also to help defend the city, so more offensive troops may be sent out when the time comes.
To help utilize the walls that he hoped to have up within a few years, archers would need to be trained to help defend the city. First, however, they would need to figure out how to make bows for the soldiers that would be trained soon. Many researchers would be needed to figure out how to make bows correctly. The flight patterns of the arrows would need to be perfect if they were to stand a chance in ranged combat.
His short term goals had been set, so he went to go talk to Rogan about the long term plans for the Empire to be great once again.

From the Extracts of a Tahark Elder's Journal...

The year rolled past once again before us here at Warcamp Guta. It has been two years now since life had begun to return to normal of the world as we once knew it. Our great Warleader had pulled us through the Age of Shadows and was leading us into the bright future...

On the turning of the third year, both the Warleader and Pathfinder left Warcamp to scout the world around us, Hunters called out to the SpearTahark as they passed, claiming that they get the good jobs. Those that traveled to the edge of our Warcamp's influence were able to find traces of their journey as they spiraled around the camp. They had promised to return before the years end and we will await their return...

Warleader Action \ Scout the area around City Map \ Lead Scouting Party.
Pathfinder Action \ Scout the area around City Map\ Lead Scouting Party.
SpearTahark 1# \ Scout the area around City Map \ Escort Warleader/Pathfinder.
SpearTahark 2# \ Scout the area around City Map \ Escort Warleader/Pathfinder.

Our hunters and woodcutters traveled to the forests after the Scouting Party had left, the Hunters promising great bounty and enough food to feed all our bellys', the young children chased the Woodcutters as they departed, attempting to wrestle the simple axes that we had saved from before the disaster, unsuited for combat, these once powerful weapons are now only worthy to be our tools. Perhaps some day we will be able to find a village worthy of being out Smiths like in the old days...

Labour 1 \ Forest Tile 3 \ +1Food +1Wood
Labour 2 \ Forest Tile 4 \ +1Food +1Wood
Labour 3 \  Forest Tile 10 \ +1Food +1Wood
Labour 4 \ Forest/River Tile 6 \ +2Food +1Wood

It has seemed that our skills with Farming have begun to increase, those that are to tend the simple fields that flank the rivers banks are marching to work with such determination, who knew that we Tahark would tend crops like those of the Humans and other simple creatures, such in the time of our past when all our food came from the Cities of our prey...

Labour 5 \ Plains/River Tile 5 \ +3Food
Labour 6 \ Plains/River Tile 14 \ +3Food

These beasts that the Hunters had brought back two years ago have begun to rise the queries of many of our people, the only memory that we Elders have of the years before the Age of Shadows were horses unsuited for the Tahark to ride, but these, they had the muscle and height that would not only bare our build but could also outmatch that of the docile animals that our Prey rode. The Children laugh as the men attempt to calm and tame the creatures, such lifts the spirits. Else where in the Warcamp, our builders work on constructing the Tents and stalls where we will be able to produce our weapons freely, I feel that simple spears will not be enough for our Warriors and that of the next year more and more weapons will be constructed...

Labour 7 \ Warcamp Guta \ Hall of Learning \ Research Animal Taming
Labour 8,9 \ Warcamp Guta \ Build Military workshops \ -2 Wood

I was shocked to notice some builders leaving the Warcamp one day, when I stopped on whom carried a log on his shoulder with ease, he looked down at me in anger. Though I am old, a Warrior should still be respected, and thus I demanded it. The Tahark informed me that they had been ordered to constuct a Hunters' Camp near the river, a place where the meats gathered by the hunters could be stored. Thus meaning they could bring back more of a bounty when they return from the Hunt. I found it a clever idea for this to be built, and was shocked to discover who ordered such a construction. Seems our Pathfinder, this one isn't one who is left behind, ever...

Darkness. The forests that cover the land of Ragt'ich is full of it. They are not the kind and gentile place that are heard in night time stories, but rather they are an ugly and rotten place. The trees are twisted and full of knots, they roots always on the ready to trip some poor wanderer. The floor is cover in thorns and sharp grass, as razor as the teeth and tusks of the wolfs and boars that seem to thrive in the area. But sometimes, even in the darkest parts of the woodland area, there are clearings. Soft wild wheat and beautiful flowers populate these little sanctuaries, the sun shining through. Inside one of these patches of light was Thorith and Roland, simply enjoying the virgin lands. "It's so nice and quiet out here" Admitted Thorith, Roland only giving a nod back. "So why did you begin me out here?"

"Well, I wanted to know how much longer it would take before You get that unit of archers done" asked Roland, looking rather eager.

"It'll take another year to find enough people to volunteer and train them, but then after that you can go on your explorations you seem so fond of." said Thorith, followed by a short silence, interrupted once again by Roland "So, what is it like running a country"

Thorith could only sigh "If there is any other civilizations out there, they have an easier time that me, because there people aren't trying to actively kill them."

Inteuniso surveyed his city. He realized that there were many problems. Houses were empty, people weren't as happy as they should be, and worst of all they were undefended. Sure, the citizens could probably gore any attackers if the time came to it, but that would lead to a lot of deaths. As such, he decided to get ready to build an army. He had people sketch out different designs from the old books, settling on one called a "Lance". This long pole had a sharp, pointy end, and would be perfect for a Kimana army.

He got out his plans, and readied everyone for the coming trials in the next year.

With the prophet Criptfeind still locked away in the temple meditation to the great Shish'k it again falls to me to reply to the needs of our people. First things first, our sage reported progress on blessing the farmland with the holy waters, however it seems the it's possible for the land to be too blessed. The seas never had this problem. In any case he will continue on the path shown to us and if it is the will of Shish'k then soon we will have strong farms.

With the successful construction of the workshops it is time to build tools and train scouts, for this we need wood and so once again workers are to be set out into the forests to collect it. Once we have it we will build enough of what Lizarthu terms 'spears' to arm 200 of our stealthiest and strongest, those capable of living far from the holy waters. Once train these troops, lead by the pathfinder himself, will scout further up the river through the forest next to the mountains.

Both these troops and our people need food, and again it seems we are short of good quality clothing. The three river plains and a near by hills must be worked by the people to provide us with the wool and food we need. Once more the wool will be turned into clothing and given to the people.

My advisers tell me that the people are too many for the shine, and not everyone can come to get the blessing of Shish'k as much as they would like. It has been suggested that excess food is given to the people to help with the depression from lack of worship, I don't personally think it is the same but it is the least we can do.

[post for Neyvn]
“So…” Muttered Gaaroth as he paced back and forth between the ‘walls’ of the main tent of Warcamp Guta, thought quite large, its interior was completely used up by tables, chests and other assorted items that were saved from the Age of Sorrow. In the end, the space that Gaaroth paced, was little more then a small path between all the ‘Junk’. “There are Elves in the Western Forest. And YOU wanted to leave them be…”

His quivering fat finger was pointed directly at Nyn who sat calmly behind the table that sat directly in the center. His hand moved calmly over the large parchment before him, not even noticing the finger pointed at him…

“The Elves can come later, I must admit that I too wished to start our raids this early, but first things come first, we need to know what the world has settled into after the Age of Sorrow. Let alone who is where, they won’t be going anywhere any time soon…” Nyn muttered as he nibbled the feather of his quill. “The men have finished taming the Horses correct???”

”Yes yes…” Was his reply from the Warleader as the Tahark continued to pace the Tent…

A muffled sound of voices and angry yelling broke both the Pathfinder and Warleader’s thoughts as an elderly Tahark pushed the folds of the Tent apart…

“I am a Taharkido you foolish Child, and when a Warrior of my status wishes to Speak to the Warleader, he can speak to the Warleader when he wishes!!!” The Elderly Tahark bellowed at the Guardsmen posted at the Tents entrance. Turning back to the two shocked Leaders the Elderly Tahark adjusted himself and brought fourth a cooling sound from his lips as if to calm down…

“Great Warleader Gaaroth, I am Taharkido Cheddarius…” He spoke calmly and clearly. “I bring the news of our Camp and the world around us…”

At first Gaaroth was about to step forward to throw the old Tahark out of the Tent but the reaction of Nyn stopped him…

“Cheddarius, my old Friend…” Nyn said with a chuckle as he stepped out from behind his table to grip the forearm of the Elderly Tahark. “You have been recording our work have you. I hope things have been good for you…”

“None the better Pathfinder…” Cheddarius replyed ignoring Nyn’s request to drop the formalities, “I have indeed been keeping track of the Warcamp for you. I hope my records reached you when you returned from the tour. But this year will be different, No???”

“Indeed… So you have heard everything and seen everything…” Interrupted Gaaroth, in an attempt to break up this warm reunion. “So what is it that you Report Taharkido…”

Snapping to attention, as best an old Tahark could, Cheddarius began his report…

“The Farmers, Hunters and Woodcutters have left early in the year, already the fruits of their labours are returning to us here at camp. The Farmers are still working the plains here and here…”

Labour 1 \ Plains/River Tile 5 \ +3Food
Labour 2 \ Plains/River Tile 14 \ +3Food

Labour 4 \ Forest Tile 4 \ +1Food +1Wood
Labour 5 \  Forest Tile 10 \ +1Food +1Wood
Labour 6 \ Forest/River Tile 6 \ +3Food +1Wood

“But it appears we will have more food then last year. Not much but its more. I noticed some Labours heading out to the forests, when I questioned them they said that they were going to be building more Hunting Camps. Here and here. But it appears that Tanners will be taking up shop out there…”

Labour 7,8 \ Forest Tile 3 \ Build Hunters Camp +1 Leather \ -2 Wood
Labour 9,10 \ Forest Tile 4 \ Build Hunters Camp +1 Leather \ -2 Wood

“I also noticed some men working on Bows in the new Military Workshops. I believe that it was a response to the announcement that Elves were sighted to the West…”

Labour 11 \ Warcamp Guta \ Military workshops \ Carve Bows \ -1 Wood

“On the note of the Elves Warleader. The Warriors and I have been wondering. When will be the first raids???”

Gaaroth began to open his mouth to reply but a silencing movement by Nyn cut his answer short. “We will be beginning the Raids in the future no doubt about that Taharkido. But when that happens we will be taking more then a few Tahark wielding Spears. Tell the men to work harder in collecting the resources, for in a few short years, we will go to War…”

"We need more warriors!" - "No, we need to find ways to allow our growers to improve the plains as well!" - "No, no, we need to improve our insect catching tactics!" - "Nonsense, we need clothing! We are running around in rags!"

In hindsight, it should have been obvious. King Usata II wanted to know what the large groups of the populance thought, so he asked for a representative of each group to meet. Maybe it was that the meeting had been delayed by the raiders, but each group had an oh so clever idea that surely no other group would have. Surely the harvesters are not a group, but a collection of likeminded groups - the fishcatchers, the fishspearers, the dragonflycatchers... for this meeting, every group had splintered into many subgroups, not to mention the formation of new groups along the old tribes that had arrived under Voshol's rule. And thanks to the way he had worded his original invitation, he couldn't reject any "representative"... except for that insolent youth who had tried to come into the meeting as the spawncaster representative. That one had been stared out of the meeting by everyone.

"A shrine to Queen Yadoggka, that's what we need!" - "No, a shrine to Snapperfather for good fishing!" - "No, we need to placate the Great Gharial and her spawn for protection!" - "No, no, for protection, we need to pray to the Golden Terrapin!" - "Seriously, am I the only one who notices that we are running around in rags?!"

And now, just a few minutes in, the inevitable chaos had set in. Everyone was talking, and those few who were listening only raised their voices to shout down the previous suggestions.

"Let us use Weshols techniques, and build a tower to see if enemies approach!" - "No, we need walls for protection!" - "No, walls might threaten the balance in the enhanced swamps!" - "Then we need to send our growers to the other swamps as well!" - "RAGS! Damn it, RAGS!" - "We should try to learn how to use the swamp beasts for war!" - "No, for work!" - "Nonsense, all that is unimportant! But our old legends, they are slowly dying! Every one is starting to tell them differently!" - "NO! MORE! RAGS!"

"COOROOAAAK!"

A sudden outburst from Awenshen, and everyone was quiet. Finally. It had only been a few minutes, and the King had learned a few things that the people wanted. But now, it was time to filter out what the people needed. With a quick gesture of thanks toward his Quietkeeper, he looked over the gathered representatives, and said "Thank you for your initial suggestions. Unfortunately, some things may have been drowned out just now. I would suggest everyone to find a few... likeminded representatives, and choose one from that group to do the speaking for the rest of the meeting. Now... maybe we can do this without Awenshen having to intervene..."

----------

"A hard day, Awenshen?" Weshol asked the Quietkeeper as she came to inspect the scientists' work. "Partly. I barely needed to raise my voice, but I had to intervene a few times. Anyway, the king has issued his orders, and your... granary will be built as the year goes. You have a project for the coming days?"

"Indeed I do. Everyone here is so full of ideas, they have trouble to keep them all in mind, sometimes even confusing them. So, we are looking into ways to not having to remember them. A few of us have taken to painting them onto surfaces, but that does not work to well for all of them. And it takes a lot of space. Yet, I feel we may be on the right path with that idea."

----------

In a small hut, a Vidal sat, entirely happy with himself. The King had heard him, after all. "No more rags", Virtish whispered. "At least for some time." He thought of the sashes and belts and cloaks he would soon create.

----------

"And this shrine will not be solely dedicated to Queen Yadoggka? That seems less than ideal in my mind." The old Vidal nodded his head in disapproval. "The spirits of the swamp do not care about us. They are not placated by our worship, everyone should be able to see that." The young Vidal made a gesture of agreement, and said "I think that this shrine is not meant to placate the spirits. Maybe it is not even meant to commune with our Queen. It is mostly meant to placate the people."

Turn 4:

The leaders of the city rejoiced! With the blessing from the sacred river food supply would be at a all time high. Groups of civilians were sent out to irrigate the farm land and increase the holy bounty. Master Sz'har counseled that the food would not increase this harvest so more were sent out to the forests and the hills to bring back food to tide the populace over until the farms are complete.
_________

"So you are going up river?" Asked Master Sz'har.
"We know the world is bigger than just this small town. Perhaps other peoples have survived the Age of Dessication." Replied Wayfinder Lizarthu.
"Perhaps so... but what about the dangers, raiders, animals, hostile civilizations?"
"You worry to much, besides I shall have to land walkers with me. I am sure I will be fine."
With that Lizarthu jumped off the small ridge they were siting on and ran to the columns of Land walkers waiting for him.
_________

Master Sz'har sighed and said a small prayer for her friend. She wanted to watch him until he was over the horizon but she had to get back to work. The peasants needed a hollowed place to put the dead so they could rest in the eternal river of the afterlife and it was up to her to draw the plans up for it.

"What do you mean they won't work?" Thorith asked, poking his head from something he was working on. The head "scientist" stood in ahead of the bandit king, sweat running down his brow. That's a bit expected though, since this is a man who's probably spent most of his life stealing other people's money. "What do you mean they won't work?"

"Well, you see, sir..." the researcher said, his breath slow from fear. "We have learned how to work the ground and the seeds, but..."

"Let me guess" interrupted Thorith "It's the workers you can't get working."

The researcher paused as his fear hit a peak, but thorith was patsent, so he was able to calm himself down. "Yes, sir, and we're not sure how to motivate them"

"Have you tried threatening them with starvation?" asked Kath'uthual, off to the side playing some sort of board game with the explorer Roland

"Oh yes, that's a good idea, threaten the people handling out food with starvation. Next we'll give our doctors the mumps" Retorted Thorith with a little smerk, then turned back the scientist "Listen, you're working with a group of delinquents. They are not very hard workers. You need to make it easier on them or they're not going to do it."

"Well" Said the researcher "we did have some ideas for tool"

"Then get going" and the NPC bolted out of the office. Thorith then went back to working whatever it was he was working on. "You should have squashed that bug for wasting your time" said Kath'uthual. "Actually, some bug are really hard to squash, they all run over the place and.." cut in Roland, as he moved a figure on the table.

"Don't you have a forest to get lost in?" asked Kath'uthual, not at all amussed. "Which reminds me" said Thorith, as he pulled a piece paper from  his desk "Give this to the people running the barracks, and you'll have your bowmen" Roland's eyes lightened up as he took the paper, and rushed out the door. "Now why can't i get you out of my office that fast?" asked Thorith to Kath'uthual, who simply rolled his eyes as he moved his figure to win.

Botanos was very pleased with how things were going. The food supply was steady. The stones were coming in. The military was being expanded. The people were happy. Things were turning out nicely.

He and Rogan had agreed to continue the plans of building the walls, on the condition that Botanos allow Rogan to train more troops and arm them as well. With the two in agreement, the plans for making the city's defense was underway.

Botanos also decided that more food was needed to keep up with the demands of the growing population. So that was also another thing added to this years list of things to do.

It was going slow, but soon the Empire would be great once more...

Inteuniso picked up his ledger, for much needed to be done.

He sketched his plans, wrote ideas down, and pondered. He wondered what might be out there.

Meanwhile...

Jular'r circled his opponent. his hooves packed in the dirt in the floor of the rough bar. Both Jular'r and Kumos had been drinking burh whiskey, a distilled liquor that was easy to make and quick to knock you off your legs.

Kumos had mentioned something about Jular'r's matriarch. A heinous crime by most standards, Jular'r's intoxication merely amplified it. He quickly got up from his stance of kneeling and charged into Kumos' side, knocking him over, horns scraping the hide. Blood began to drip from the scrape.

Thus began the Ritual of the Fight. One would wait for the other to leave an opening, and would then charge. It was a ritual of skill, finesse, and strength.

Jukar'r saw Kumos swing his head, opening his neck up for attack. Charging at a blinding speed, Jukar'r slammed into Kumos, his horns penetrating the throat. Kumos fell to the ground, neck bleeding. The bartender came over with a rag, and stopped the bleeding. Kumos was shamed for what he had done. Pleased, Jukar'r stumbled out of the door, headed home.
