It will be great fun to eventually design an entire arena, complete with mechanical/trap hazards to spice combat up. Maybe a hill in the middle of the arena with a pressure plate on top, that when triggered drops a single weapon into an arena full of unarmed combatants.

Yeah, there's lots of potential for Arena mode to grow into it's own game mode entirely. Imagine building and managing a little arena, scheduling the fights, strategically planning seating and vendors, buying huge megabeasts to draw really big crowds....

Gah, I'd make a suggestion thread all it's own if I wasn't sure the thought hadn't already crossed Toady's mind.

It could work. If Shield Wall formations work, mod in "Spartans" who use a round shield, a lance, and a secondary weapon that looks like a sword, swings like a sword, and kills like a sword, but is trained under spear skill, so your Spartans can use it as a secondary weapon. A two-man one square shield wall would be required, with one crouching and forming a low shield wall and one on the same square forming the top half of the wall. Then just use a spawn macro to spawn Persians when the ones on the field run low, and Spartans if they run low.

All you would need is a Phalanx formation and a touch of modding.

Doubtful you could get this to work till formations are official, and even then it might be hard. Besides the Spartans from 300 barely used the phalanx; Leonidas just ran in and stabbed everything to death in slow motion. Something tells me that with 300 units on screen you're going to have slow motion too.

They'll be more like real Spartans were. Aren't formations in for the next release? With my description of the battle, I was planning on using a spawn macro every now and then instead of having everyone on screen at once.
