EDIT: Oooh, how about a workshop that allowed you to grind any rock into sand? You would need bags obviously, but it would give your useless rocks a use!

Not how chemistry works, unfortunately!

If you're going to just get sand from arbitrary rocks, you might as well just make the smelter give it to you for free.

So basically you're saying that sand is not in fact granular rock particles?  Because that's what it sounds like you're saying.  And if that is what you're saying, I think you need to go look up the definition of "sand" again.

On the one hand sand is made of ground up rocks (or occasionally sealife) but not all sand is useful for making glass.  On the other hand all sand in df is used for making glass.  The gripping hand is that 60% of the earth's crust is silica dioxide anyway, so it's not a bad approximation at all.

Well, I'm in favor of having actual  glass friendly rocks being turned into sand, if they are already present in DF.

Exactly.  And there's no lack of silicates in Dwarf Fortress geology (or real-world geology; about 90% of the earth's crust is made up of silicates, at last estimate).  It'd be a good use at last for microcline and orthoclase, both of which are tectosilicates.

80% of earth's rocks would still probably make for some ultra-crappy glass if you just pulverized it and nuked it, because of all the impurities.

The problem is that you don't just need "silicate rocks"; you need relatively pure silica or else you're going to get complete trash.

For one thing, "silicates" include a whole ton of minerals besides silica (SiO2), which is what you want, and even if something's primarily silica, you need it to be very good silica.

If anything, DF is a bit lenient in this regard, allowing you to use pretty much anything called "sand". There are probably some rocks you could find out of which to make glass, but I don't know what they'd be aside from relatively good quartz, and we can already use that (at least in the form of rock crystal) to make very good class.

Besides that I won't change my buildings much, although I would love if at some point it's possible to produce living beings from a building, so that I can make a cloning chamber, heheh.

I would make something that takes humanoid or inedible corpses and strips the flesh off, leaving the bones.
Or just alter civ ethics to butcher anything.

If so try this:

*slight adjustment to the deep mine thing*

much like magma forges need to have magma bellow them have a deep mine require a chasm or [HFS] related square just bellow it (ie on the bottom layer) and give it a random very small chance to produce something really nasty and hostile now and then.

because when you dig too deep you disturb that which sleeps there.

Also there's no more chasms, and I don't know about new HFS, but ol'good glowing pits were like... Hmm, chasms too.
