If the steam version accepts modding, make sure you use this for x-com 1 and 2. (aka, ufo defense and terror from the deep)

Or if that doesn't work, browse to http://heathen.byethost13.com/temp/ and then download it from there. Should work, i think.

There's a nice readme.txt and what you do is unzip it into the xcom 1 or 2 folder and run the xcusetup.bat .. It will ask you a series of questions about what you'd like in your game. I recommend the auto-naming of recruits based on experience/kills/skills and the one that randomize ship designs even tho it creates some butt ugly ships. There's a map randomizer, but sometimes it creates some really crappy maps with places you cannot get to without blowing a wall. You can try to see if you will like it. It also fixes some issues with terror from the deep weapons to make them match ufo defense a lil bit more in terms of damage and infinite-ammo-ness.

I've already got X-COM-UFO Defence, but with the rest of the series (especially apocalypse- I've heard nothing good about the non-strategy based ones and TftD appears to be an unbalanced reskin) for such a low cost how could I refuse?

Regarding the mod thing- I saw somewhere on the steam forums that I think it works, but may be hard to set up/not work completely correct.

Half of my squad was destroyed out in my first mission on the easiest difficulty.

I like this game.(UFO Defense)

Can someone gift me this game? I cannot buy off steam because I have no credit card, and from what i've heard (Yes, heard, demo version from one of the x-com games didn't start(?) and the abandonware version had some finicky troubles with the installer) it sounds cool.

And my 2nd mission results in my entire squad killed except for one dude who managed to kill the last alien in a counterattack(or whatever it is) before he passed out.

X-Com is awesome!

Funny, I am in the same boat. I bought X-com 1 brand new, my first game ever and one of the few I don't have the box for anymore.

I skipped TFTD for what ever reason, but I bought Apoc as soon as it came out (Still my favorite) and then followed up with Interceptor which wasn't a terrible game. Then I bought the collectors edition. Then I bought it on steam.

Personally I've started to like TFTD more.  Gauss and Sonic seem better balanced than Laser and Plasma.

Amazingly, I still have the original TFTD manual intact. Like it'll be of any use these days.

I guess I ought to make a plug for some multiplayer XCOM madness while I'm at it.

The days when manuals were over 100 pages. I have mine too, but I managed to break their start up copy protection before I knew anything about computers. The game acted funny after that but I was still sooo proud...
