By having a giant log file of nothing!
(40 seconds to edit?  That gives me 40 seconds to find their IP!)

This is a misconception. Adding text to a file does not increase waiting time (as far as I've seen). My editing times on Draco's machine wavered from 9 seconds to 15 seconds, I believe, and 4 on others, however about 13 on another machine without the dragon.

I believe it is the more that you are trying to edit, the longer the wait time.
