Sacking the Temple
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:45:59 am »

In my travels with a Dwarven adventurer, I came across a true wonder of wonders... an Orcish temple whose floors were paved with Pitchblende blocks. Pitchblende being an exceptionally rare stone, and of an exceptionally beautiful color, I decided to conduct an experiment. I slaughtered the entire fortress' population, save one Orc marksman, whom bit my head off and became a Wrestler after we incapacitated each other and grappled for some time.

I then moved to the site with a dwarven colonization party, walled in the last orc, and set about dismantling the temple. I am less than halfway through and have only some mere 900 blocks.

My plan, once the dismantling is complete, is to get an adventurer, find a suitable site (preferably a cave) and haul the block bins cross-country, then start a fresh fort there with abundant building material.

If this works, might it be possible to do something similar in the next release?

900x667 (weight of one 'blocks') = 600300 urists of weight, sir.

You would need quite strong adventurer to carry a bunch of them on a time.

Simply wow. That is... sheerly amazing.

However, don't blocks/items scatter across the map once you abandon?

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

They do. Though, something to take note of: Embark and abandon the site of your new fort (where the pitchblende will be transported to) before hauling blocks there; this tells the game to 'remember' that area. Otherwise all the blocks will go poof when you embark there.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

Won't that make magma not work properly for forges? Or does it just make already built forges inoperable?

Why does my adventurer keep crying?
Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

The bug is thus: you need to discover magma to make magma buildings. In a reclaimed fort, if the magma was discovered before the fort was abandoned, the game does not consider you to have discovered the magma even if its coating the entire surface, so you can't build buildings without a hack. I think already built buildings will be fine though.

You can avoid the bug by not discovering the magma until the real fort, and pipes that are naturally exposed do not suffer this bug.

Also, blocks in bins definitely do not scatter. Blocks are probably heavy enough on their own not to scatter as well.
