Battle axes are fun. So are every other kind of axe. They tend to be quite heavy, however. And my noodle-armed self isn't going to be wielding an axe anytime soon.

Not actually! Battle axes tend to be lighter than wood axes, despite popular culture.

Axes are pretty easy to use. Just hit things with the sharp bit. Swords are the hard one; using those wrong will damage both yourself and the sword.

There's still the whole "being strong enough to swing the thing without falling over" problem. Besides, a sword is a lot of fun to use, and can be more effective. Although spinning in circles with an axe while a big group of people attack you sounds like great fun as well

Having had someone swing a splitting axe at me in anger, I can tell you it takes little strength and no technique to make it dangerous.  Making those long, predictable swings effective in combat is another matter.

As a good rule of thumb, don't enrage people when they're standing near you holding an axe.

I just tend to leave when people become enraged, or not enrage them at all. Saves me the trouble of having to duck

Interestingly, most axes and maces weigh about the same as swords of the same general size. Woodcutters' axes are far heavier than practical combat axes, because maneuverability doesn't matter when the foe is a lump of wood, and so hitting harder is the main priority. If you have to wind up to hit something with a battlefield weapon, you'll just get a blade in the gut and die, while being unable to swiftly recover from swings and begin parries or new attacks tends to get you the same.
