Nah, just think of them as artisanal sandals. The one issue with holes is wetness and cold, but its not like those kinds of shoes are ever really waterproof anyway.

There was a NZ army training session a while back that ended with a bomb going off slightly too close to houses and blowing out a bunch of windows.
Be glad the German army is just underfunded and not both underfunded and incompetent.

The concept of army service is different on this end and is not based on deployment durations. There is draft service, which lasts a year, and there is contract service, which lasts as long as you like. Which might take long, because it is mostly about massive training maneuvers rather than actual war zones. But basic equipment is the same for all soldiers, drafted ones just don't get advanced gear.
Hence good boots for everyone!

Here in canada military gear tends to be top grade as well.  Have a pair of black, steel toed boots from the coastguard and they have lasted 7 years of useage now.  Considering I wear them as winter boots as well as work boots, and am quite lax in my polishing/waxing of them... yeah they are barely worn, bloody good boots.
