Well, on some Winters, our Arctic Fremen Survival Kit included snowshoes or skis (so we don't fall through the crust and get trapped in the 5+ feet of snow below us), a muffler or scarf over our faces and mouth, and goggles over the eyes (so we don't lose all our warmth and moisture while we breathe, and don't go blind from wind-whipped snow), insulated and waterproofed jacket/pants (to keep our body heat and moisture in, and keep the melting snow/cold water out), and several layers of thermally-insulating clothing.

So yeah... it's kind of the same thing. Minus the Sandworms, of course... and good thing too. Walking without rhythm is nearly impossible in snowshoes.

My town suffered a bout of really bad weather last week. (100mph sustained straight winds, with golfball sized hail) You know, the kind that flattens houses in Florida?

Anyhow, all the major damage I got was to my front porch awning. Its all crooked now.

I was quite fortunate. The next door neighbors had a 100+ year old conifer literally get blown out of the ground. (Not pictured is the north side of their house, which looks like mother nature did a driveby shooting on their siding.)

Down the street two houses down (the other way), a huge maple tree was similarly blown out of the ground, and several telephone poles were snapped off.  The spectacle on mainstreet was so bad, that construction and utility people had it cordoned off, so I didn't get any pics.

I am *still* waiting for the insurance adjustor to show up.
