Stinky image.
That looks a lot like these big black beetles we get around here called "june bugs" or "june beetles"
Of course thats not their real names but everybody calls them that.

Looks nothing like what we call a June Bug in the midwest.

Yeah, aren't stinkbugs usually really black and kind of almond-shaped?  The California ones are, anyway.
According to wikipedia 'Shield bug' and 'Stink bug' are both common terms for the family of Pentatomoidea that contains about 7000 species. ???
Apparently the rabbit hole goes deeper than I first thought!

Seeing how our seasons are reversed, the Australian equivalent of a 'June bug' would be the Christmas beetle, a species of Scarab most known for its metallic golden chitin that appears around Christmas time.

There are other subspecies that are closer to yellow, white, brown or green, but they aren't as cool.

Max can i be you? Those scarabs are just soo. Amazing...

We get the occosianal japanese rose beetle. Which are scarabs. Not shiny but they are biiiig.
I found one at camp once and grabed it and put it on my shirt like a brouche.
It didnt move. I think it was sleeping on my chest as it stayed almost the whole day before flying off. It was super cool.

The hooks on that thing's legs are wicked looking... inspirational for some creature design, actually.  I don't think I've ever seen appendages quite like that used creatively, and I think they'd work really well.

Yeah, they're adorable creatures. The hooks are perfect for making them hang off your shirt. We get them down south too- I remember collecting four at once and placing them on my shirt. They stayed for hours.

The shells of beetles are fine with me.

But it's the underside that makes me go ohgodohgodohgodohgod.

I'm pretty good with insects and spiders... It is just scorpions I have a totally irrational fear of. Fearsome little critters, can't stand them.

Well, there is a degree to which fear is rational. I would say my emotional reaction to scorpions surpasses this threshold.

Not so well when the claw's bond to whatever it grabs onto is far stronger than the leg's bond to the beetle's torso...
Christmas time can get depressing in Australia, with all the Christmas beetles scattered around the place in their pitiful death throes. :P

Eh, they are on a desperate Sex > Eggs > Die pilgrimage anyway. By that point as long as a few get a chance to mate, not much else really matters.
