Looks like a shield bug. They protect their children by keeping them huddled under their flat, shield like bodies. Also interesting to note is they produce a very bad smelling liquid when you crush them, so you should avoid killing it.

Even here in North Carolina we call them stink bugs. Nasty little things. Never knew about the shield bug term though, that's pretty interesting.
