Yeah, my criteria for getting rid of or killing bugs are "Things that are actively preying on me" like mosquitoes/leeches/biting flies/parasites, and "Things that will ruin my stuff" like grain moths/silverfish/termites. Otherwise, we're cool.

I have sort of weird beliefs when it comes to killing animals for food, though; recognize that one thing is giving its life to sustain another thing (me). I thereby have a responsibility to live my life in a way that honors the sacrifice of another being to sustain it.

My life and my legacy is also the legacy of all the livestock and fish and plants I've consumed. I've got to do good by all of us.

I kill only ticks, mosquitoes, and the like.  Stuff that causes allergic reactions and disease, and will hunt you out.

So spiders get a pass.

We have quite a few highly venomous spiders here in Aus, so I either escort them out in a glass + cardboard, or if they're too difficult to catch, I kill them.

Yeah, those I would curbstomp.  I'm talking about the little babies here in California, which never get larger than a quarter.

>White tail: very germy bite, supposedly causes necrosis but hasn't been proven: KILL
>Victorian Funnel Web: mildly venomous bite causing pain and fever iirc: ESCORT OUTSIDE
>Sydney Funnel Web: extremely venomous bite, deadly, though we don't get any down here: KILL
>Huntsman spider: non-venomous, germy bite, enormous size: Escort outside, but hard to catch because they're big.

There was a funnel web in my bathroom the other day. Not fun.
Generally there's only redbacks and huntsman spiders around here, I kill the redbacks but keep the huntsmans around because they eat insects and they look kinda cool.

I may be a horrible person for this, but my philosophy on insects/arachnids is...

Kill them. Kill them all.

Unless they're outside. In which case I mostly only kill mosquitoes and never come into contact with anything worse.

there was a time where i held respect for all animals, big or small, and wouldn't even kill mosquitoes. then i came to realise that the insect brain is so small and simple they can hardly be described as sentient, and now i hold my respect just for higher creatures like vertebrates and cephalopoda. still, it pained me a lot when a yellow jacket got trapped in my kitchen lamp and i got to watch her being slowly cooked to death

I don't judge other people for it, but I don't like the idea of killing something for the sake of convenience. Even when it just applies to a little wriggly, crawly, skittery thing, is still a life. And that's something I don't have the power to give back. If I take a life, directly or indirectly, I'm going to do my best to make sure the benefit outweighs the cost.

I really don't like arthropods in my space, so I generally try to remove them. Smallish spiders I set outside. I haven't had the misfortune of running into a spider larger than a dime's diameter, but I imagine I would react poorly. I wouldn't want to kill it, but then I wouldn't want to be near it either. Brooms and cups, perhaps. I try to let bees back outside, since they're in trouble as a species and we need them. In fact, I try to shoo most flying insects out a window. The exception: moths. They're usually huge, and they make me disconcerted and uneasy. They repeatedly whir at my head, and they will never ever leave through my windows or doors. Once a moth enters my dorm room, it declares Thunderdome. I also smash every mosquito I find in my room because mosquitoes have probably killed more people than any other species. The hate is in no small part fueled by their parasitic nature. Gives me the willies.

Fuck wasps. All of my HATE for them.
But they prey upon pest insects! It's the reason why I make sure to let mosquito hawks out windows, because they hunt and eat actual bloodsucking mosquitoes. (They even seem to prefer the biting females.) Mosquito hawks are mighty allies.
