So basically cheap wire=expensive wire unless said wire is for a different kind of signal, but cheap speakers aren't usually as good as expensive speakers?

pretty much.

only things you can do to wire to improve the signal is sheilding, which is less about quality and more about interference.

I make my own headphone cords out of flexible copper mesh twists and spray-on Teflon, plus an audio jack of course. It works great, and I can make them as long as I need to. (If you do this, be liberal with the Teflon if you don't want to get electrocuted.)
