So, the other day we had a crazy thunderstorm (which may or may not have resulted from me playing this on the recorder), which included flash flooding, high winds, and all kinds of lightning. Apparently there was enough localized flooding that Mini-Charbidis made a brief appearance in the middle of my apartment parking lot.

Also, as I was snapping photos of the aftermath, I heard a loud crack, followed by a low, roaring *brakakakakakzt* sound, and a flash of pale green light. After it stopped, I ran over to see what it was, and it happened again; apparently the power transformer in my apartment complex exploded. I wasn't able to catch it on photo, but it looked kinda like this...

...if that were a tangle of pale green lightning that seared the air, stretching taller than a 3-story apartment building. Not a good time to be standing in a nearby puddle, snapping photos of whirlpools.

We lost power, but we did get a really pretty sunset after the sky cleared, though my cellphone camera doesn't really do it justice.

The lightning was probably green due to rapid combustion of the copper coils in the transformer. It's the same reason that green fireworks are green; superheated exploding copper makes a pretty green.

This is a month or so old, but my friend (pictured in the background) introduced me to an awesome used bookstore on the University of Michigan's campus. The shelves are close-packed and mazelike... walking through it was like wandering into a literary labyrinth, full of cloth and leather-bound books, many of which were more than 100 years old. It was amazing.

I snagged some heavily illustrated books on North American Mammals, Mesoamerican and Asian History, and the first few anthologies of Foxfire Magazine (an old periodical that detailed archaic methods of farming, metal smelting, brewing, crafts, and folklore).



I also stopped by the U of M Art museam, and found a rather cool contemporary assemblage sculpture:

This was done by a Cambodian sculptor, and depicts a Khmer Aspara Dancer, made using the pieces of hundreds of detonated assault rifles. Many traditional Apsara Dancers has been killed in an act of "cultural clensing" by the Khmer Rouge, and the statue was done to honor them, as well as to make a statement about the importance of continued disarmament efforts; she's also standing on a pile of shattered guns, and is breaking the one in her hands in two.
