Nice Mosin carabine. Is it chambered for original 7,62x54 mm R cartridge or re-chambered for one of your American ones?

What model is that, exactly? I find it odd that it doesn't have an in-built flash suppressor, as most guns I've seen of that make .

Still from a video, actually. Great fun to shoot, but I certainly wouldn't want to shoot it without my ear defenders on.

Thanks! It's 7.62x54r, of course. It's genuine old soviet equipment. I was shooting old surplus rounds, as well - they're simply the cheapest ammo I can get. Cheaper than all the equipment and supplies to make my own, at least.

The M44 carbine, with built on spike bayonet. Made in Izhevsk in 1945 - it's got the tiny hammer-and-sickle stamped on it, which allows me to place it. It was build for urban combat, really, and flash suppression might have been considered unnecessary.

Once I got to shoot 20 gauge hunting shotgun. That was... loud. Should've got some ear protecting gear somewhere. Had none of that at the time, unfortunately. And, oddly enough, the kickback was stronger than my grandfather's old coach gun - that's a funny piece, made in the end of XIX century in Belgium, he had to drill some new channels and replace old lousy bolts holding hammers in it. 12 gauge. Operated smoothly, kickback wasn't that strong.

As for flash suppression, damn piece of equipment was adopted into Russian military in 1891, by the end of Alexander III's reign. It served for more than 50 years by 1944, and by that time had been mostly replaced with automatic weapons. They weren't really developing it any further by that time.

Well, it depends on the load of powder in the cartridge and weight of the gun for recoil.

Yes, I haven't thought about the weight - coach gun was definitely lighter, and even though the load of gunpowder was bigger for 12 ga cartridges, recoil wasn't that bad because the gun itself was rather light.

So...took my kids on summer vacation the week before last, and a dwarfy vacation it was! Up to Luray Caverns and Skyline Caverns, then a day trip over to Washington DC and a visit to the National Air and Space Museum.

First, though a trip to the local kids' museum and its animal exhibit. We were lucky in that one of the great horned owls was perched right down at ground level in front of the glass.

Now, on to Luray!

Cavern pools make for incredible optical illusions. The water is only a couple of inches deep, but the absolute stillness of the water creates a perfect mirrored surface, resulting in some amazing photos.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a Myconid from Star Control II. Pretty sure.

HDR lets you capture some amazing texture on the dripstone formations.

Then on to Skyline Caverns. It's a bit tackier, with garish colored lights everywhere but also lets you get a more up-close and personal view of many of the formations.

Spoiler: Caution! Jazz Hands! (click to show/hide)

After leaving the underground behind, we ventured to DC and the Air and Space Museum. LOTS of planes, rockets and probes there, including quite a bit of WWII hardware.

Spoiler: The crowning glory. (click to show/hide)

And finally, no trip to DC would be complete without a trip to the White House.

I'm really glad you precised "Those are my kids at the end". Would have been quitecreepy otherwise. :p

Cute kids. But why were there two fences? I'm fairly certain that there used to be only one...

The second fence looks like a cheap barrier put up to stop people vandalising the actual fence.

It's a strategy known since medieval times: between the fences, there is a 'killzone' of no cover nor concealment (no crowd of passersby), and it's very clear one is up to no good if spotted there. I doubt archers would start shooting at you if you were to step/climb over the first fence, though.
