Using rough stones in mega-constructions?
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:08:11 pm »

Is it okay to do this rather than use bricks? It doesn't make a difference gameplay-wise, other than being faster. But do you use stones or blocks for your mega-constructions?

I prefer to use blocks simply because they're binnable, so I can have plenty stored on-site ahead of time while I'm still planning. Besides, you can never have too many high-skilled masons.

I always use rough stones for aesthetic purposes. (I like the style.)

For reference, constructed walls look exactly the same whether they're built from rough stones or from blocks. The only real difference is that walls constructed from blocks boost your fort's Architecture value more.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I think Tokkius is refering to the mental aesthetic. The dwarves living and working with rough stone rather then specific bricks.

I use rough stone, just because I'm lazy. However, bridges (and for some reason archery targets, as well as workshops) get made out of blocks.

I've never understood how an archery target is made out of a rock and is better than a wall.

Or why it needs to be designed first. You'd think someone could just engrave a bullseye into the wall and have the marksdwarves go at it.

Well, obviously the rock is, uh, softer and... um, better?

Probably because it doesn't get chewed up by the bolts. And remember, bolts break either way.

Personally, I use blocks for two reason.  The first is that 90% of my megaconstructions are constructed primarily of glass, which only comes in block form.  The second is that I feel that if you're going to make a megaconstruction anyway, why not go the whole nine yards and build it of blocks?  They have higher value anyway.

I use blocks for a few reasons.
  • Binnable
  • Worth more than rough stone
  • Provides mason jobs for the whole fortress
  • More plausible (you wouldn't build a cathedral out of rough hewn stone, the thing would collapse!)

I usually build a gulag of 10-20 mason shops and set the whole fortress to mason labor. This gets me thousands of blocks in only a few seasons or so. This is especially useful when you have the dwarven economy, as it provides well paying jobs for everyone in the fortress, and keeps your dwarves nice and happy. Once you finally start building, there are plenty of readily available blocks, plenty of well-trained dwarves, and lots of jobs to do.

Same here. Hauling kills. Blocks make it better.

It must be made out of blocks.

Rough stones are only good for making blocks from or for prospecting for ore/gems. (Custom reactions.)

Anything less is just taking a shortcut, and thats lazy and undwarven!  >:(

I use blocks almost exclusively, the only exceptions being interim structures, like scaffolding which I'll need to tear down soonish, or workshops which I only need long enough to satisfy a moody bowyer. Leaving aside glass constructions, which are exclusively blocks anyways, I prefer to use blocks because
a) Blocks in bins are denser than bulk stone, meaning the stockpile can last longer before it needs to be refilled.
b) Blocks have higher value than bulk stone, meaning created wealth is higher.
c) Good way to level mason skill; metric fucktons of blocks mean lots of mason experience, plus time spent building everything, all of which lead to highly-competent masons.
d) Building with blocks prevents Fun that results from forbidding stone at the stocks screen; forbidding alunite also forbids the still made from alunite, which means no booze gets made, which leads to heartache and tears.
Mostly, though, I've gotten it into my head for whatever reason(s) that anything which can be made from a block should be, once we have that capability. Workshops shall be made of blocks, walls and bridges shall be blocks, everything that can be shall be.
