DF + joystick = wait, wut
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:56:33 pm »

So I recently rediscovered my Logitech Wingman EXTREME joystick
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And though, "Hey, I bet I could play Dwarf Fortress with this."

And so, after about 3 hours of mapping the buttons, I was doing this
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But what are the benefits of playing DF via joystick, you may ask? Ah, well, now it gets interesting. The rocking D-pad functions as the arrow keys, as does the axis- I couldn't find a way to map one of them to Shift+direction- the paired switches on the top are mapped to + and - and Z+ and Z-. The throttle and twist axis are unmapped, as I couldn't find any command worth putting on them - and I tried, but it seems that they're both a bit too sensitive to use reliably.

I find it actually a whole lot easier to control the cursor with the joystick than with the arrow keys, and Z+/- mapped to a single key make moving the camera much easier.

If only I knew a way to get a commodore 64 joystick to work with my pc, it would be awesome.

They might actualy be more suitable for DF key bindings, as they only have on/off states.

I make Grimlocke's History & Realism Mods. Its got poleaxes, sturdy joints and bloomeries. Now compatible with DF Revised!

That's awesome, though, nothing will ever replace my precious keyboard. Its just too hard getting used to using something else.

That's Toblerone OneByOne.
Haha, the name seems quite fitting. Where do you get of these godly creatures?

Oh man, I only have the 4 variety pack
BJs is where I got mine. I'm sure you could order them, lol. Try Costco or BJs or BigLots or Sam's Club; any of those big box stores should have them.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

When Dwarf Fortress gives you lemons, you mod them to have [DAMBLOCK:80][FLIER][FIREBREATH].

What, no similarly-massivelybuttoned throttle?

Now solder a keyboard onto the side of it, and you win forever.

Actually, someone I know was working on making a (5?) key keyboard, to be activated in combinations while being handheld.

At one point, I had about ten empty glass Pellegrino bottles and 3 empty glass Martinelli's sparkling cider bottles in my room.

That empty Powerade bottle is nothing.

Ever reuse them all as water bottles as well as powedered drink bottles? Best use for spares I can think of for them so far.

Yeah, 1 powerade is nothing.

Yeah, 1 powerade is nothing.

Old glass bottles make the best water bottles.
Not for carrying around though, just for drinking at your desk.
