I host a lot of old survival themed games. Island Troll Tribes, winter survival, goblin squad, and others. Never played DoTA but it has it's own wikipedia article. :o

I could never get into ITT for the same reason I could never get into DotA.  The playerbase is so hardcore and so impossible to please that you get harassed if you don't know what you're doing.

I like warcraft 3 custom maps, mainly when there aren't heroes involved. I hate heroes, and I am quite bad at using them.

I wish I had the frozen throne expansion, it seem there are some good custom maps and things there.

I used to love it. I still play, from time to time, but I ran into a lot of the same problems with elitists. In terms of the main game, the unit AI was great but having to use the heros so much was annoying. It was better than the Starcraft heros though, being forced to use a unit with pitiful AI and no healing sucks bigtime.

Oh yes, I can't see how anyone could play custom maps before Frozen Throne.  Custom abilities, new tilesets, all kinds of indispensable stuff.

These maps sound really awesome, especially ITT. I should really get on line, what's the best server to play on?

Also, am I the only one who actually likes heroes? The fact that you have one unit that could turn the tide of battle is awesome. It creates situations where you're frantically try to kill that enemy archmage that's bee giving you hell, or times when you wipe out a rather large force using your hero and just a few other units. FUN!

This one too?

One of the more interesting survival games.
Unfortunately can take some time to get some players together.

I thought the campaign/story was pretty good.  The first time I played multiplayer I realized that the strategy to winning was based solely on how well you could memorize hotkeys/micromanage, and had practically nothing to do with strategy.

The best thing about WC3, though, was the community-made maps.  The Helms Deep map is still the best RTS community map I have ever played on.  Even the Helms Deep level of Battle For Middle Earth (1 or 2) couldn't hold a candle to the WC3 version.

Starcraft is still my favorite RTS of all time.  Back when I was in college we would have weekly all-night LAN parties at the school computer lab.  Those were some good times.

I really like micromanagement.
I hate it, hate it hate it hate it.
And that made me hate the game, why am I constantly forced to run around baby sitting each individual unit to ensure they all use their abilities properly. And why oh why are random abilities auto used? It's been a while but I seriously WTFed at some of the abilities that can be set to auto use especially when other which you will always want to use as soon as they become available can't be set to auto use.

That said I played through the entire campaign so the game must do something right. :D

This is one of those things that really piss me off. It does seem like they randomly picked powers that get auto cast. The undead spider and orc wolf rider both have the exact same skill, but the spider can auto cast and the wolf can't.

Never played starcraft, hopefully SC 2 will be just as good as the first.

I hated Warcraft 3's regular gameplay, and cheated through the campaign.  I can't stand micromanagement and I really wish units would just take the initiative and do something on their own so I don't have to stretch myself thin.

Custom Gameplay, on the other hand.  I loev custom maps.  Parasite, Zerg Infestation, The occasional game of Risk, I played all of that stuff.  I used to be really good at Parasite, and knew all the tricks for getting them to kill their comrades.

DotA sucks.  I have never seen people more fanatically obsessed with something so trivial.  If you die within the first five minutes or so of the game they scream at you and restart.

Shit, anything I said on how I felt about Warcraft III would just be this, only slightly reworded.

Parasite was (is) a very different game, and I really loved it. Also I enjoyed dota, but not to extreme edge. I think that it's good and nicely done but the overall obsession with it is not healthy.

Also I like hard zombie maps. Actually, just one, I think it was called Night of the dead: Aftermath (not other pretty shitty NOTD, mind you), it was quite hard and had a realistic "feel" with all the dark textures and low visibility plus fog, plus random missions and uberbosses and extreme jumping and dodging were "teh win". Undead Assault which seemed to be a ripoff (I don't know which borrowed from which) was easier but much more "gamey" so I didn't like it.

Also, I've played some "rp maps", and I like troll tribes (mostly island troll tribes due to their "pvp" feel) but I rarely played them because they take a hell lot of non-stop gaming.

Not at all, WCIII heroes seemed awesome to me.  You could revive them, so you could actually risk using them in base-based maps.  In SC you just had to keep them in the base behind some heavy defenses, since their death meant instant loss.

I also like the way heroes in WCIII leveled up.  That plus the fact that you can alter the level cap and growth rates opens up all kinds of possibilities for custom maps.

Nuuuuu the other NotD is way better, man.  Aftermath is lame compared to NotD2.  There was another one, I can't remember what it was called anymore, something along the lines of "The Lost City" that was really good too, and had a chainsaw.
