Warcraft 3
« on: January 28, 2010, 10:43:40 am »

I've always thought of Warcraft 3 as the prime example of what an RTS should look like. The races are very different from each other and I really like micromanagement.
I used to rent this game every now and then to play with my friends, but I've never actually owned it. I bought this and The Frozen Throne last Thursday and its been all I've been doing for the past week. I'm currently running through the campaign, and well, I'm quite impressed; the game's AI is great, even greater than some of the newer games on the market. The story is nice too, though I think the whole Galactus/Silver Surfer thing is a bit cliche.
I haven't tried my hand at multiplayer yet, I think I'll try and play a few matches later.

Anyway, discuss Warcraft 3, Frozen Throne and whatever. Feel free to discuss DoTA here too, just remember it ain't the thread's main subject.

Galactus/Silver Surfer thing?

Maybe I'm just not familiar with the comics, but was there something like this in the game?

Or are you talking about Medivh and the Burning Legion?

I hated Warcraft 3's regular gameplay, and cheated through the campaign.  I can't stand micromanagement and I really wish units would just take the initiative and do something on their own so I don't have to stretch myself thin.

Custom Gameplay, on the other hand.  I loev custom maps.  Parasite, Zerg Infestation, The occasional game of Risk, I played all of that stuff.  I used to be really good at Parasite, and knew all the tricks for getting them to kill their comrades.

DotA sucks.  I have never seen people more fanatically obsessed with something so trivial.  If you die within the first five minutes or so of the game they scream at you and restart.

I learnt how to play DotA a while ago when I went to an internet cafe with a friend and he showed me the basics without insulting me in all caps, which was the result of any other attempts at learning. It's fun, albeit hard to be good at.

The Warcraft 3 +TFT singleplayer campagins were really fun.

Multiplayer was ok.
Liked to play a game or two with friends, but all this micromanaging and hotkeybashing was annoying me.

Dota was great until I grew sick of the elitist playerbase, which took me about a year.
Still couldn't get around the idea of it so now I'm occasionally playing LoL and probably will try out HoN as soon as I get a new computer.

I would totally challenge you all to some custom map games for old times' sake, but I lost the CD key and it's not installed on this computer.

I'm thinking about buying another copy soon, Warcraft 3 has taken more of my time than any other game I've ever played.  I thought I was going to throw up when I realized I'd lost the CD key.

Yep, the Medivh and Burning Legion stuff is very very much like Galactus, Transfomers Gen 1 Unicron (Was that him? I tend to mix their names up :P ), etc.
Also, Cthulhu, if you still have your license keys, I think you can download the game off of the support section on their site.

I'd be happy to play some multyplayer games with y'all once I complete the campaign. I'm playing the 3rd orc mission atm.

Or heck, just crack it.

I can't install it to crack it without the CD keys.  Fake CD-keys almost never work in multiplayer, and Blizzard CD-keys never do.  The life of a pirate is a lonely one.

S'weird. I reinstalled WC3 about a week and a half ago and played the campaign to death. On easy. Because I am no good at RTS's. And I always play RTS's as if they were starcraft.

I thought the story was awesome. The game play however, I didn't like it. Too fast paced, too much hotkeybashing, too much rushing and micromanaging. I'm a macromanager.

Personally I hated it. Up until then I had loved everything Blizzard had made but the whole heros thing was just annoying.

I'm not a big fan of unit 'spells' that don't happen all the time / aren't toggleable options either, but that is another matter and worse in some other rts games.

I thought starcraft was one of the best rts' I have played even though it suffered a little from the above.

I enjoy 3v3 or 4v4 random team from time to time. Always interesting to get the mix of different races and skill levels. Of course when other team is all awesome and you get smashed its not so fun.

WC3 was decent, but my first love was Total Annihilation.  The twisted burnt metal wreckage left after every battle, the bombastic orchestral score, the ridiculous arms race culminating in nukes, and none of this limp-wristed "ghost" crap to designate nukes either: just click on the radar map and erase those dots from existence.  Opponent building anti-nukes?  BUILD MOAR NUKES.  D-gunning with the commander, and so on.  Destroy all Arm units.  DO SO NOW.  Ah fun.

Then for different reasons, Homeworld, which I decided to start playing again.  It's amazing something so slow-paced should be the hardest RTS I've ever played.
