Utility to create custom maps in DF
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:59:44 pm »

Is there any utility to generate custom maps in Dwarf Fortress? I've been wanting to hand-make a mountain for my dwarf fortress, but I don't know of any utility to do this.

Is there one?

EDIT: I hope this is the right subforum for this. If not, I apologize.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

This would probably be best for the modding forum.

I'm fairly positive that this is impossible at the moment, since editing geographic features would require editing on the world map level.  I'm sure it's possible with memory hacks, but I don't think anyone has done much with that yet.

Of course, if you want to have a mountain that looks a certain way, you can always tell your dwarves to make their mountain look that way.  There are plenty of megaprojects along those lines.

I'm pretty sure this is possible in 40d, but it would be.. so tedious..
Honestly you might as well just find a place with a steam and magma pipe, and embark with a crap tonne of bauxite to make a casing for each z level of a mountain.

Wouldnt hurt to have sand on that map either, to make glass pumps.

The dwarfy way would be just to embark on a flat area and channel down in the shape of the mountain.

Doesn't that technically make them the anti-Dwarfs?

Heh.

Normal dwarves dig their fortress in the mountain. These dwarves dig their mountain in their fortress. Sounds hardcore  ;D

Anyhow, if you want to make a mountain without caring about the fortress part then you might want to just mod in some superdwarves and make all stone boil away. You could carve in an existing mountain, you could carve a mountain into some elf retreat, you can even cast a mountain from obsidian! (bonus points for doing it on top of an elf retreat)

If Urist cannot embark on the mountain, the mountain must embark on Urist.

I thought this was a thread about a utility someone had put together to generate customized worlds. There goes my plans for a map modeled after Middle Earth.

Why not just build a mountain out of obsidian?

Embark on a flat forest. Clearcut the forest, burn the landscape with magma and sculpt the obsidian into a towering mountain fortress.

Decorate everything with elf bone too.

1) DF has a built-in map painter, accessible via the "Generate World with Parameters" screen.  Not many people know about it and it's hard to use.
2) There is in fact a utility that turns heightmaps into DF worlds.  The screenshots don't work anymore and the creator has vanished, but the program should still work.
