And yet, for everything but the top one, people can and do pay a high price for them.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Nothing

Is

Ever

Free
Dwarf Fortress.

O2

Friendship and love.

Two hands, two eyes, and a mind.

The beauty of nature.

Dwarf Fortress may be free to you, but Toady gave up a lucrative career to make it.

Plants inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen.  Something is lost to get oxygen.  It may not matter to you, but the point is that it's not free.

Friendship and Love are a give-and-take thing, no well-adjusted person continues a relationship from which they're getting nothing.

Why do you think expectant mothers have such frequent and unusual cravings?  It takes a lot of nutrients to make a person, and food costs money.

Nature is a violent thing, and species go extinct so other species can flourish and be beautiful, a highly subjective trait.

Just because it doesn't cost you anything now, doesn't mean it doesn't cost anyone, and it doesn't mean it won't cost you down the road.

I don't see how it's pedantic.  The oxygen one was a bit pedantic, but especially the Dwarf Fortress one is not.  Toady values his creation more than his career.  That's perfectly fine, but he's still giving the career up to create his creation.

The idea that "nothing is ever free" doesn't mean "YOU will never get anything for free" it means that everything has to be created somehow at an expenditure of money or effort or something somewhere

it comes down to the law of conservation of matter if you push it far enough actually

What about the removal of something?

As for the trees idea: There is one thing I learned in some survival class I took many years ago, and that is even if a plant is edible, never eat any part of it if it is anywhere near a road. It will be full of wonderful toxic chemicals which seep from the underside of vehicles and probably the roadbed itself. So while it might be a good idea to plant fruit trees near a road for hobo population control, it wouldn't be a good idea to use it as a food source.

But this changes your statement.  Your original statement was more "You will never receive anything for free" while your new statement is "It's conceptually impossible for anything to be free".

No, you read that from my statement.  My original statement was "Nothing is ever free."  As in nothing.  Ever.  Regardless of perspective.

the sunlight costs hydrogen

since you did not pay for the hydrogen that is burnt, your are stealing it

like if there is an open air concert, and you listen to the sound from behind the fence

not yours. can't have. go to space jail
