The Bloody Mines (Community Fortress)
« on: January 27, 2010, 06:51:21 pm »

After my original community fortress failed to deliver undead and excitement, I have found an appropriate embark site.

Mission's first log:

Tales of the failure of a new fortress have reached my ears. Tales of horrific happenings, tales of blood running down the hallowed halls of the mines. The name has a fitting name then, The Bloody Mines...

First the nobles sent me to a barren frozen wasteland, then as soon as I get the place running they give me a bunch of soldiers and throw me into this place of death. The soldiers aren't to bad, I'm already friends with most of them; still I hate the nobles with a great intensity for doing this to me. May Armok spew magma upon their rotting corpses.

The previous team sent here only consisted of a small team of seven, almost all of whom had died. The few survivors who had reached it back to the mountain homes told of skeletal fire imps, snakeman, and goats on the rampage. The founders had tried their best to defend the fortress that they had made, but in the end most had died, one went berserk, and the last went stark raving mad. The mad one is still alive but he only babbles about dead friends and snakemen everywhere.

Looking out over the horizon I can see the site from here, smoke from a magma vent is visible... also something ominous circles the skies. The black sand below me is warm. The warmth of it will be my only solace if the rumors of this place hold true.

Positions still accepted, just have to wait for migrants. ^_^

Name: Beanchubbs
Profession: Axedarf/Woodcutter
Gender: Either, doesn't matter much
Background: Beanchubbs was a woodcutter for a small fortress for a while, but was drafted into the military and sent on an expedition to a wasteland. He/she would like to continue chopping down trees, because that is what he/she loves to do, but knows how to wield his/her axe well enough to protect his/her group from harm. Beanchubbs also speaks in Third Person.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

Heya, i'm here

Name: Kalari. Female
Proffession: [if reclaim based,] Marksdwarf/Weaponsmith with furnace after the fact, [if non reclaim] Weaponsmith/furnace operator.

Background: Kalari is a metal worker, who was a decent shot with the crossbows and bolts she made, but due to demands of a noble she ran into one day, got sent on a mission, to a supposed hell-hole. well at least there was a magma-pipe. she will also use wood or bone for her crossbows.

This is Dwarf Fortress! If we can chuck magma at innocent wildlife, we can do ANYTHING!

It was at this point that I realised that dwarves are actually the essence of chaos. What else can make perpetual motion machines, recursive statues with more building materials than the average tower and has such a short attention span that a damn fine chair can off-set the death of their entire family.

Yep it's reclaim based.

If you don't mine Beanchubbs I'll set you up with a female as well since last game most wanted male characters.

hum... reclaim... well my motto is, if ya hit it the first time and it doesn't work, hit it again and harder so!

Name:Steady, male
Profession:Hammerdwarf/brewer
Background:Steady for many years, wondered the wilderness, drinking, alot.  However on day, he hit the damned prince with a bar stool, in well a brawl, and under the kings decree was sent into the army.  Great he thought, someone's gonna pay for my beer!  Sadly, it turned out to be the forward garrison, which only got water..  So the second a time came up to get outta the damned guard duty, he jumped on it.  However, he wasn't aware he was heading into the fabled bloody mines.... on the front lines non-the-less.

Welcome back. And yes we will be hitting hard. Although the land will be hitting just as hard right back. ^_^

Anyone wish for the aristocrat position? Otherwise I'll take it.

I know they should all start out as friends since it is a reclaim. Relationships would be funny though so I will keep an eye out for that. However I will say that they will be working their behinds off trying to get things up and running again. I purposefully let three years pass in the fort to make it so only 7 embarked from fortress value, and also to give other creatures time to move around.

Well you do get grudges, which are fun, nice to watch a dwarf make a bee-line for that one guy who pissed him off 20 years ago, during a tantrum, so he can throw him through a door.

I'll take one, name it Hilbo and make it a Hammerdwarf/Mechanic if possible. His mechanic skills are like the ones the Fonz has, where a mixture of his presence and hitting things hard forces his coolness to act upon the machine - forcing it to work lest it face the wrath of the universe.

'b' is different than 'x' and a Bed doesn't hold back magma as well as a Floodgate no matter how fast you type.

That sounds vaguely familiar... did you prorpose a similar character in Nist Akath?

Yes or No You're in.

Ooooooh. Me want in.

Name: Nub, Male
Profession: Marksdwarf/Record Keeper/Architect/Trader/Miner (Yes it's a lot, but the middle three are almost barely used anyway :P)
Background: Nub always liked managing small little forts with idols and small toy crafts when he was a child. These games made him better at record keeping and designing buildings than the other dwarf children. When he grew up, he joined the army in hopes of being sent to a small outpost to practice his building skills and do what he did as a child in real life. After years as a marksdwarf in the military, he sees this outpost as his chance to make a name in the world and make his dreams a reality.

(Yes, it is my first post. I've been lurking for a while and I've always wanted to be a part of a community project. This is a start. :P)

Architect is actually used quite alot, almost in half the buildings actually. Especially so in constructions like walls, floors, and fortifications. This is also reclaim mode so I can't really set you up with noble skills as well as with mining.

Ah. Then take off the mining skills.

I don't do reclaims often, so sorry if I'm clueless about how they start out. <.<
