The future DF2

Do you think Dwarf Fortress should eventually evolve to Dwarf Fortress 2?

It would make it easier to tell people "it has changed a lot since the first DF. You should try it. Now it's much simpler to control and has a lot more content.

Essentially, my question is about how to set a point where the game has changed so much it should have a name change to ease explaining people that it's not the same game anymore.

...what?

Could you perhaps rephrase that with a few less acronyms? I'm not entirely sure what your point is.

For the horse, though, it's possible that wild horses migrated in, knocked her up, and migrated off.
Did they even call afterward?

The problem is, the "df 1.0" is a common myth, and people think that when it arrives then it takes over the humanity as skynet or something. For most people it looks like 1.0 will never arrive, and looking at the completed vs planned features list it's obviously that a human's life is too short to do that. It's basically a "baby" of Tarn which he grows up as he gets older.

Also, it's kinda weird to speak about 2.0 when we're not even close to a Beta. We're in an early Alpha now, for more than 8 years already.

Nothing prevents him from arbitrarily saying "okay, this is 1.0.0. expect improved sieges in 2.0".

OP: Just wait for interface rewrite for your seccond attempt at conversion of infidels.

Even Dwarf Fortress 1.0 will probably be renamed to Armok 2, or some other name entirely, as it shifts away from dwarf-based gameplay to more general fantasy world gameplay.

Yeah, Capntastic has the point, this is the alpha of Armok II. :)

Dunno, "Dwarf Fortress" became kind of brand name for whatever it is that Creator works on. It is fairly well known and recognized and also easy to use.

I think it would be kind of silly to abandon it. Coca Cola does not contain cocaine anyway and it still keeps the name too...

We all get that DF is an alpha, but the speculation is that abitrarily rebranding it at some point as DF 2.0 when it has been made playable enough for the masses might just be a good idea. Too many see DF 1.0 (for so it appears to the vast majority, claims of alpha aside) as a notoriously difficult game to play, owing to the controls and graphics, etc.

Essentially, a marketing gimmick.

It makes me sad that Dwarf Fortress is never going to get to version 1.

Ohh there is a definite Version 1 (which if I remember correctly is the completion of Core and Req items)

So even if he works on this game forever we wll get to version 1 at some point.

I was not aware that Toady was marketing DF right now. I thought word of it spread by the players, in the sense of "PLAY THIS GAME AND/OR WE SKIN THESE BABY MERFOLK!!!"

If the version number bothers people, tell them to multiply it by 10.

Most version numbers are fairly arbitrary anyway. At least DF uses its to gauge progress fairly well.

Whatever he does, he is concerned about such stuff life what turns off peopel from game or how easy is "to get it" see:http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=34311.0

Which is not surprising: In order to have decent living, i would estimate he needs about ~ 50% larger playersbase and needs constant replacements for whoever stops playing and donating. And later on, he would about 150% more in order to support family and generally have comfortable life.

No players = no money = has to get some other job = no DF development anymore.

The "And/Or" part is most brilliant.
