Which is not surprising: In order to have decent living, i would estimate he needs about ~ 50% larger playersbase and needs constant replacements for whoever stops playing and donating. And later on, he would about 150% more in order to support family and generally have comfortable life.

No players = no money = has to get some other job = no DF development anymore.

I did avoid the topic at first, but:
One reason to use another release like the one we're waiting, to rename the game to DF2, could also be to make some donors see that years of work have been invested in the game since they already deemed it worthy of donation and maybe it was time to also donate to DF2.

Even Dwarf Fortress 1.0 will probably be renamed to Armok 2, or some other name entirely, as it shifts away from dwarf-based gameplay to more general fantasy world gameplay.

Away??! But...but...then it would just be "Fortress".
