Sparring Explosion?
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:19:15 pm »

So earlier, I draft some new recruits and set them sparring (with armor and shield).  A while later "Kivish Lastnamey has died from colliding with an object".  In the barracks is Kivish's arm, a line of blood 6-8 tiles long, then a scattered pile of chunks sitting next to the wall.  In the dining commons I track down one of my 2 original champions, who has Kivish as a kill but no bad thoughts from murder or accidently killing someone or anything like that.

I'm familiar with sparring accidents, but the worst I have seen is broken neck --> suffocation.  It actually looked like an intakill from a hammer...  in Iden McChampion' inventory is an extra helm she is carrying around in one of her hands.  So can helms get critical hits and is that what asploded Kiv or did something else happen?

One of the dwarves hit him with something causing to fly at high speeds and hit the wall. Sounds like you need a bigger barracks.

My soldiers actually get happy thoughts from killing each other while sparring, though one with a "took joy in the slaughter" thought doesn't really cancel out 20 other "lost a friend to tragedy lately"s.

It's a champion that did it, meaning she's probably physically strong enough to do that with any weapon. It can happen even with slashing weapons, though not as often.

Since improvised weapons like held items do blunt damage, the chances of your champion spraying someone all over the wall are high.

Well, chances are low, mostly because the champion is skilled enough at using improvised weapons (wrestling) to be unlikely to land a "real attack" when sparring. But chances of major injury, if a real attack is made, are high.

The main reason is that you had a champion sparring with a recruit.

Doesn't tend to go so nice.

The dwarven trash compacter is my preferred method of removal.

^ Actually, in sparring, the higher your skill level, the less lilely you are to wound someone. Very handy for mentoring beginners. Also, it's highly likely that the huge stat boosts and a good weapon would have been the cause of death here, not the champion's straight up skill.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Ungulateman: However, a freshly beweaponed champion, still unskilled with, say, his shiny new ☼adamantine warhammer☼, will quite often hit at full force. With Ultra-Mighty strength.

^ Yes, that too. But a legendary wrestler will almost never hurt another spar partner whil wrestling, because of his/her high skill.

Lol I had no idea dwarves could hit eachother with random objects, other then throwing them.  I wonder what causes them to do that... counterattacks or something?

Anyway I know bad things happen to recroots when sparring champions but its usually fine if you give them armor and make sure they can only *wrestle*  Especially because I modded out most of everyone's organs to nerf crossbows  :D

So... one last question.  What makes them carry around extra crap they can't wear?

He grabbed Dorfy McSplosion by the eye pieces of his helm and swung him. The ferocity and strength of his swing launched the poor chap right out of his helmet and exploding off a nearby wall, the helmet still tight in Iden's grasp. Iden McChampion still holds onto the helmet. Never letting go. He cries himself to sleep at nights.

He could have hit him with his shield too! That tends to make things fly.

Same thing that causes your barracks to accumulate a rug of +pigtail socks+, the wrestling skill. If it's armor/a weapon/a shield they pilfered off their sparring buddy and they're also set to use that type of armor/weapon/shield then they won't drop it until you tell them not to use equipment anymore.
