Champions may not hurt each other often, but when they DO, it's kinda devestating. Mangled limbs, instakills, and the aforementioned flying splatter.

I recently lost one to an instakill from another champion wielding an exceptional clownite spear.
Thankfully, it was a recent migrant, so nobody cared. The champion took joy in slaughter, too.

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

So... one last question.  What makes them carry around extra crap they can't wear?
Same thing that causes your barracks to accumulate a rug of +pigtail socks+, the wrestling skill. If it's armor/a weapon/a shield they pilfered off their sparring buddy and they're also set to use that type of armor/weapon/shield then they won't drop it until you tell them not to use equipment anymore.

To expand on this, there's a bug that causes dwarves to only check to see if the equipment they have is the right type, not if it's on the right body part. If you were to modify helms to be worn on the feet and set your dwarves to wear armor, then change helms to be worn on the head again and assign different dwarves to wear armor, the first dwarves will not realize that it's changed and continue walking around with helmets on their feet. I think Toady has this fixed in the next major version.
