Auto-hide stone option
« on: January 26, 2010, 02:50:02 pm »

Half the time when I'm digging I end up going through all the stone I unearth and d-b-h to hide it all just to get it out of my hair. One of the settings in the
  • ptions menu should let you have all new stones be marked as hidden, with a submenu letting you set options differently for ordinary stones, economic stones, ores, and gems. While we're at it, this submenu should have options to set the rocks as dump as well as hidden.

The one concern I have is that stockpiles don't clear themselves of rocks when designated, and this is one of the few places where rocks actually take up space. Having something like this would neccesitate some ability to have stockpiles clear themselves of rocks, presumably through the labors of a dwarf with the stone hauling labor enabled.

I've always alleviated the stockpile problem by digging out large caverns and setting up a half-dozen mason's workshops cranking out rock blocks (or craftsdwarfs cranking out crafts if you prefer) on repeat. That will also clear out all the stone in the fortress, in time.

Additionally, you can never have enough doors, tables, chairs, etc. In the event that no auto-hide or auto-clear options come along, train up a couple of goo masons and everything will fix itself.

I used to do that in ages past, until I finally realised you can't make stone furniture and goods out of anything but raw stone.

This saddened me. I really don't like raw stone stockpiles. Nowadays I just flagrantly exploit quantum stockpiling and have all my stone delivered into one mile high stack next to the nearest mason workshop, for construction and optional atom smashing when my FPS invariably drops too low.

Oh hey, three other threads! :D

Not a very common suggestion, but it has come up before.
