More ART_*_MODIFIER tokens
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:12:10 am »

Some new tokens I'd like to see to complement ART_FACET_MODIFIER and ART_IMAGE_ELEMENT_MODIFIER:

ART_BIOME_MODIFIER: Influence which creatures, plants and trees art is made about.  I'd prefer my dwarves to make engravings about tower-caps and underground crops rather than surface trees and surface crops.

The could also be a ART_BIOME_AUTO_ADJUST parameterless token to automatically adjust the art biome weights based on the START_BIOME and BIOME_SUPPORT tags.

ART_SYM_MODIFIER: When choosing a shape from descriptor_shape_standard.txt, weight the choices according to which symbol group (language_SYM.txt) the shape belongs to.  There could be a ART_SYM_AUTO_ADJUST token to automatically adjust the weights based on the CULL_SYMBOL and RELIGION_SPHERE tags.

I like it.
ART_BIOME_AUTO_ADJUST might need tweaking, though- the areas the civ is in/has traveled through/has conquered...And, don't really see why this shouldn't be the default case, having some sort of ART_BIOME_ALL tag to nix it.

Maybe a token for stuff the artist wants to express would be nice. Currently the engravings only show what was really seen and what is historical correct.

ART_MEME_MODIFIER...

"Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of a wolf and a wolf and a wolf and a moon.  The wolves are howling at the moon.  The image relates to the time when the three wolves howled at the moon and is awesome."

ART_MEME_MODIFIER...

"Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed rendition of a masterfully designed rendition of a masterfully designed rendition of a masterfully designed rendition of Moonhowls Awesomestars which depicts wolfs and a moon.  The wolves are howling at the moon."

Fixed.  You forgot what "meme" actually means.

Do want. The silliness of some combinations is fun, but it would be nice to have them be more relevant.

ART_EXPORT, depicting the top export that your fort is known for.

ART_CRIME, because nothing immortalizes an unjust properly executed beating like putting it in bronze on a hatch cover. Dwarven artists are not without a sense of social commentary.

ART_DEITY, possibly the deity that is most worshiped by your population. People have been asking for religion to have more involvement, and while this would be pretty cosmetic...I haven't seen any references to the gods of the crafters in their work. I'm still new but I've seen at least 50 artifacts with images on them by now. I know it's more intended to record the history of the Fortress...but half the time the images are about figures in history I have no clue about, or are so vague (The image depicts a group of dwarves. A dwarf stands in the middle. He is surrounded by dwarves) they might as well be replaced by gods.

ART_DEAD_RELATIVES. Grieving mothers, and all that.

ART_BATTLES The game could track what year/season the most dwarves and hostiles died, generate a name, then spit that out with the date and the casualty counts. I usually make notes when I want to remember how things went down...so I'd actually read these artifacts to remember what happened. (As opposed to just for laughs.)

I'd love that! And, of course:

ART_INDUSTRY, depicting whatever your fort produces most (possibly, disregarding food and booze and other similar things.).

Actually, come to think of it, I'd end up with tons of

"The image depicts a pile of blood-stained clothing stripped from dead enemies," for my fortresses.

Also, I guess the game already does track and name battles in a sense, and you can have that information end up on images. But I think it only relates to individuals, rather than the battles themselves and it doesn't tell you about how many were killed.

Unless it is tweaked so that it only depics exported goods that are made in your fotress, after all, game keeps track of that... .

Actually, Art_Meme_Modifier sounds like a good idea, except it would instead use randomly generated memes.

E.g, A goblin dropper has been built in a fortress, and an engraver designs a masterfully designed engraving of a goblin falling on a wall. Lots of people admire it, and other engravers engrave this in their fortresses.

And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

Leading to "Goblin-dropism" over "Elf-incinerate-ism" which ends in "Donatism" which in turn two Mice-men use to became high emperors of the Plane.
