You're too important to party!
« on: January 26, 2010, 07:32:32 am »

Something that would be very nice is the ability to designate certain dwarves as having fortress-critical tasks, and forbidding them from attending any parties that get thrown. This would then give them an unhappy thought - "Urist missed a party due to his unremitting work schedule recently."

Free the piece of furniture they are using to party. They will party in a meeting hall, which is designated from a piece of furniture. You can permanently stop the party by freeing the room, then re-designating it.

Just helpful advice; I don't really feel one way or the other about your suggestion.

Oh, I know about that, but it's somewhat annoying having to re-designate my dining room every five minutes. Plus, I don't mind about most of my fortress partying - most of them ave nothing particular to do atm as I don't have most of my industries set up. But my blacksmiths are busy building the fortress and haven't time to be partying, dammit!

It's kind of cruel to ban certain dwarves from partying, don't you think? I would rather have more control over the parties themselves (maybe ban all parties without resorting to only using meeting zones) or have parties more procedurally generated (dwarf holidays anyone). Maybe have a way to order dwarves away from a specific party with an unhappy thought ("Was forced to leave a great party for work recently").

Dwarves should honestly just do what (most) normal people do, which is party in their play time, not in their work time. A particularly stressed out or unhappy dwarf might not be able to drag themself away from a party, but in general a happy dwarf should be alright with either prioritising work over attending a party or just substituting partying for the 'no job' task if there happens to be a party going on somewhere.

I think it should depend on relationships to the one holding the party and others attending it. I do agree that there should be some kind of prioritizing.

Really, I can imagine special occasions like a wedding party to be an exception, but a random dwarf just saying "hey, let's throw a party for no reason" with the result being 80% of my workforce tied up for literally up to an entire season is the reason I simply don't designate meeting areas by room type anymore.

Rather than specifying individual dwarves as being unable to party, I'd like to be able to specify certain labors as being more important than partying.  If there's fields to harvest and plant then I don't want my farmer partying, but when there's no farming jobs available then farmers partying is fine.

I'd also suggest that the unhappiness penalty for missing a party escalate with the number of missed parties, and de-escalate with each party attended.  The escalation would probably have to be at least geometric to prevent the non-partying dwarfs from being kept happy with legendary dining rooms and such.

Could almost expand the idea into a revised needs system, but anyway

With parties in particular why not designate an average, of how many that aren't of an exceptional are allowed to be attended by individuals and thrown fortress wide. Could even create a noble position of a dwarf in charge of arranging fesitivities and launching them when there are lulls in activity.

Prioritising labour would be important, though if you need 100 grates made up asap, but your masons are running like the wind to get critical masonry work on a non-essential wall done, then the improvement is voided. Designating priority to specific jobs makes more sense than labour types. Could even apply it to other things such as pulling a critical defense lever while all your fortress is partying, one dwarf get a bad thought about having to leave the party to pull the lever, but gets a happy thought when welcomed back to the party.

Gooodness Id certainly would hate to get a great and important job only to effectively become a lifeless slave.

That's okay, because if you demanded the right to take time off from work to attend two or three month long parties, nobody would ever employ you. And might drown you in magma.

How about an orders menu where you can select whether dwarves can always leave for a party (giving great happy thoughts, could be used to ward off tantrum spirals), dwarves can party on breaks and when they have no work (normal, gives some happy thoughts), and dwarves are not allowed to party (giving unhappy thoughts).

Here's what I'd like instead:  The ability to require a certain number of dwarves 'on call' for each type of job.

When a dwarf is 'on call' for that job, they will do only that job.  More importantly, they will put off sleeping, eating, drinking, and partying to varying extents (obviously, they will only put the essential ones off so far.)  This pisses them off somewhat, though only to a limited extent (because eventually they'll just throw up their hands, say 'screw it', and abandon the job.)

But more importantly, when a dwarf who is on-call wants some time off to do something like that soon, they'll basically add a "relief requested" job to the job queue.  Another dwarf with that job enabled will then take that and relieve them, allowing them to go off and do their stuff.  If something happens to forcibly put the dwarf off-call (like death, injury, passing out, etc), the 'relief requested' job is likewise added.

In this fashion, you could ensure that you always have one miner on call for emergency constructions, or that you always have one food-hauler on call, or whatever.

You could also set requirements on the positions -- e.g. the player could create an 'on-call' position for a miner which requires legendary skill.  Of course, if you only have one dwarf that fits, they'll never get relieved, and are eventually going to become horribly pissed.

There would also be an option to allow some things while on-call, such as eating or drinking.
