What is your most recent mega construction?
« on: January 25, 2010, 07:52:27 pm »

This thread is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. I want to see what people are building!

For my part, I offer CraftedAbbey, the shine to Saint Urist. Not very mega, as far as mega constructions go, but it kept me busy for two in game years

Jesus balls that's amazing. There really isn't that much to say beside 'wow'.
My question though, is what software are you using for the 3D? I've only got 3Dwarf, which doesn't render materials as visually distinct.

Hard to say, as I tend to work on two or three at a time and exactly when I finish is kinda blurry.

I guess it would have to be the Hanging Jails of Dwarvylon, I can't remember doing anything in between them and my current project, the Tower of Nine Perils.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

On the right is the very beginning of my grandest dining hall. It may be hard to make out but the central column is completely hollow and the gold tipped towers are 2 of 6 to be build. The wall just behind them is as high as it will be. Towards the back on the left, the spikey tower is my living quarters.

I've started many megaprojects, but usually ended up abandoning them long before they really started looking like anything. I do have on finished, however:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The whole tower is smoothed and engraved cast obsidian, including that big bowl up top. The four little towers coming off the rim of the bowl have pump stacks arranged to draw lava from the bowl and spit it out towards the middle; they're powered by a big system that has to be run from ground level that also happens to go through the lava in the bowl itself. Outside the lava bowl and tower, there is no sign of the power system whatsoever.

The tower itself actually consists entirely of housing for my people. Workshops and storehouses are belowground. It's not particularly fancy, but I'm still proud of it... Even though I always imagine it as being much taller and less squat than the picture makes it look  ::)

I use Visual Fortress.  A quick browsing of that topic will show you that, while Towerscrape is impressive for the fact that I've built a 35x35 base tower that's not hollow, it's anything but impressive compared to some of the amazing stuff out there like Boatveiled.

My latest one was a 47x47x16 cast obsidian tower. No 3D screenshots on that one, though it looks fairly plain from the outside so you're not missing much.

Before that was a 45x45x23 hollow clear glass pyramid filled with magma (pumped in from below).

I'm taking a break from DF until the next version is released.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Working on a constructed tower of obsidian. I'm building the spa right now. First, I have an entire floor that will eventually be filled with magma. Above it, I'm building a spa (room full of 2/7 water), a sauna (a room with grates with a pond designation over them, ponding water one z-level just makes steam), a tanning booth (glass window walls), and a magma bather for those irritating in laws nobles.

Working on the Magmaworks. If it uses magma, we've got it.

Although all we've got so far is an aquifer to defrost the river and a side corridor for the metal industry, so it takes a little imagination to envision the orbital magma bombardier and all-z-level magmafall.

Undergrotto, my still WIP giant open-air underground grotto. Currently about 25z high (though it'll be up to 50z high when done), and entirely carved from natural rock (nothing is actually built except seperate buildings within the cavern). Haven't had a chance to touch it since early December, but I've put about two months of work into it thus far and will probably need another one or two to realize all the projects I'd originally envisioned. Hopefully I'll be able to take some time off in February to get this done before the new release. Screenies are big, fyi.

In Visual Fortress:

In Stonesense (yeah, I've posted these ones before, kinda old):

Also, Untelligent, every time you post screenies of that fort I am impressed anew. Jesus, man.
