I find hunting to be an easy way to train dwarves, while also benefiting your fortress. just make sure you give them armor and weapons, unless you want them to wrestle those giant tigers

Hunting is only effective in savage biomes. They won't hunt if they've got nothing to kill, and they'll just spend time in your meeting zone socializing.
