I'm seriously loving the demo.  I rented Bayonetta, and I find myself playing the AvP demo more than that, which is weird, because Bayonetta's crazy fun.

Alien's my strongest, I'm getting good at knowing when to disengage and go hide in a corner for a little while, so I do okay as long as there aren't any grenade-launching marines around.  Love that tail whip from the ceiling.  It took me forever to realize how the pounce/tail whip works against marines, but when I figured it out, I also learned how to counter it as a marine, so that's a nice two-fer.

So is the flamethrower totally useless, or am I doing it wrong?

I got the demo on my PS3 and I can't even find any games at all.

Quote
SURVIVOR:
For the ultimate test of stamina, play Survivor Mode. Survivor allows for up to four players to enter an arena to fight waves of progressively stronger aliens. Each arena will be set up with two main areas. One will be a platform which is relatively easy to defend; the other will be an area where ambush by aliens is more likely. Supplies of health and ammo will re-spawn in this second area.

I like the sound of this, I liked that mode in the first/second* one too though :)

Quote
INFESTATION:
For total over-whelming mayhem, nothing comes close to the tension and potential for pant-wetting scenarios than INFESTATION. One player starts the match as an Alien Hunter and their task is to kill the Marine prey. When a Marine player is killed they will join the Alien Hunter team and help to kill off any remaining Marines.

This could be fun as well, although I imagine any competent group of marines will just group up somewhere with good firing lines and wait. It's very hard for an alien to infiltrate then.

*delete as appropriate, I can't remember which

Survivor mode is Co-Op mode from the original but with less players...  Infestation is Alien Tag, but presumably with less players... ::)

Why are there less players?  Is there any reason?  Is the Console really so inferior to the PC that even modern ones can't handle the same amount of Players a PC game from 10 years ago could?  No that's not it.  Look at MAG.  So what the crap is it?  Are they hoping to release a DLC that increases the player limit or something?  Is it just that developers are lazy as hell and don't want to bother writing decent net code when they could be sleeping and letting the PR teams make the game 'good'?  What?

It's possible the level of graphics and the number of enemies required for more than 4 player survivor to be fun is too much for the xbox360 to handle.

They seem to allow a different number for each game type which implies it's not just laziness. And until you start hitting server response and bandwidth limits adding more players isn't exactly hard code wise.

Could be laziness to not develop large balanced maps though.

If it is too much for the 360 to handle that's just bad coding.  The 360 may be the weakest system but it can still handle GTA3, Saint's Row 2, Dynasty Warriors 6, Halo 3, etc just fine.

I have no idea how many aliens are spawned in later levels of survival. I'm willing to bet there is far more polys in an alien than a GTA civilian or a Halo 3 critter though.

I also don't know how much resource goes into the wall-walking AI, or how good said AI even is. Again GTA and Halo don't need anything like an can-ambush-from-any-direction critter.

It could well be poor/lazy development or it could be something else entirely. Saving on development costs by cutting out any map creation and balance for more than 4 players for example.

More likely, the limited number of Survivor players is - *gasp* intentional.

Look at other games with co-op gameplay. L4D and L4D2 have 4 players, as does Borderlands. MW2 has 2-player co-op. Perhaps the devs decided that co-op works better with fewer players?

Either way, don't forget that the PC has (so they claim...) dedicated servers and a server browser. Which means that there's a good chance we'll have unofficial 32-player servers and 18-player co-op within 2 weeks of release.  ;D

There are servers like that online. It's really quite enjoyable. Hell the new content release for L4D2 has the 4 survivors from L4D and L4D2 together.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

I'm guessing it's more to do with latency than anything.  Without dedicated servers, you're stuck with someone's 360 (and their residential internet) serving while they play.

I think this is probably more a balance thing than anything.  Look how two marines cooperating can dominate deathmatch.  Imagine 16 against AI aliens.

They have every possible lane of fire covered, including some that only exist in theoretical dimensions, 100-round clips.  16 guys would be unstoppable.  Even a queen couldn't take more than a few seconds of 16 pulse rifles and grenade launchers.

I guess then they'd have to design better AI and levels...
