Vegetable oil
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:52:17 pm »

I was going to bring this up in the other 'oil' thread, but that seems much more focused on mineral oil.

Vegetable oil was a very important resource in the ancient world.  It's easy to extract -- all you need is a press and the right kind of plants.  Olive oil was very important in particular.  It had key uses in cooking and medicine in the ancient world; as this link says:
Quote
Hippocrates mentions 60 different conditions which could be treated with it, such as skin conditions, wounds and burns, gynaecological ailments, ear infections and many others.

Other applications include:
1.  Cleaning.  It can be used directly or used to produce soap.
2.  Tanning.  Vegetable oil is a useful agent for tanning.

And a few potentially interesting future additions it could support:
3.  Perfume, which it can be used to produce.
4.  Lamps.  It's a useful fuel for lamps and lanterns.
5.  Paints.  It can be used to produce paints.

Oils in general may at some point need to be addressed, seeing as they are useful. Currently, however, you can make oils by adding an extract tag to the raws. Dig deeper has oils, as do a few other immersion mods.

And then throw a torch down after it... Of course, we'd need torches first   :(

I always imagine Dwarves using bear grease or horse tallow for their cooking oil needs... but I suppose some of those smarmy noble types wouldn't mind buying some "vegetable oil" from the human trades.
