-it could make cloth, items and so forth in alchemy labs

This is an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene cabinet. On it is an image of dwarves in PolyMethyl Methacrylate. The Dwarves are cross-linking PolyEthylene.

This amused me far more than it should.

If oil is added, it will have to be used for things that are 1400's appropriate. Otherwise, I approve, you can do a lot of funtm things even with crude petrochemicals.

Having oil in the game would be just so.. excellent.

Water cannons converted to oil cannons, being shot into magma only to cause the ENTIRE CANNON to be filled with gushing fire!

I full heartedly approve of this idea.

Pour oil down a slope, making it impossible to climb/force creatures in the slippery tiles to slide down the slope.  Possibly take 1/5 fall damage at bottom if the slope is high enough (in other words, you'd need to slide 5 z-levels to take the same amount of damage from falling 2 z-levels).  Also, creatures walking through oiled tiles have a chance to slip and fall, leaving them stunned and prone for a time.

Then light it on fire.

Well you could start creating metal barrels, which would be used for food and oil, but once it has been used for oil, it would get an oil tag and it would be only used for holding oil...

Oil could be stored in wooden barrels.

I would like to see pitch in the game, that gave way to flaming bolts and ballista ammo.

Another Semi-related Idea would be Vegetable oils. Vegetable oils would be identical to petrol in every way, save a few crucial differences:

1) It would be extracted from plants like, say, canola. Say, Just enough to cover a tile from 10 canola bunches, 20 bunches for 1/7, 40 for 2/7, 60 for 3/7 and so on up until 140 bunches of canola to produce a tile full of Canola oil. (Obviously, this is waaay less efficient than oil.)

2) It wouldn't be lethal to swim in (unless it was on fire)

3) A dwarf could use it in cooking, say for a "Fry" job (Fried Alcohol roast, anyone?)

4) It wouldn't be nearly as valuable.

5) It wouldn't produce as much light when burned in a lantern or other light source. Additionally, It would produce more smoke.

6) Burning copious amount of crude oil would get the elves cheesed at you for raping the earth or polluting the atmosphere or something. Crude smoke would also suffocate trees, and if you have huge boiling pits of oil or something, Humans would be less inclined to trade and migrants would be less inclined to come (Because it's hard to breathe or because nobody wants to trek to a place that looks like an evil citadel). Vegetable oil would not pose these problems.

I have to say, that for game that puts this much effort to rocklayers, veins etc. it is a surprise there is no oil.

Natural uses for oil would IMO be lighting once the darkness is in, secondary would likely be military uses, flaming bolts, catapult ammo etc. and to smaller part alchemy (not making plastic, but some alchemical stuff should use oil)

Maybe siege engine like a cannon, which you load with oil, light it and channel the fire out from a narrow end like a flame thrower.

That ought to be the main reason to produce vegetable oil, allong with a renewable source of light.

If you're going to have ground oil in, you might as well put in oil from other sources as well, namely animals like whales.

This I would love. Possibly have oil drop as a byproduct of rendering fat and processing some plants.

I would like to point out there is no such thing as a canola plant...

Canola stands for CANada Oil Less Acid.

I believe the plant you are looking for is rapeseed.
