War with the Elves!
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:44:48 am »

Ok so I dug around a little before posting this, to see if I could find it, and I couldn't. (Even though it's probably SOMEWHERE....)

Any suggestions for fending off Elven "sieges"? I'm finding to fight those skulking, Armok cursed hippies.

Also, for the forums enjoyment, a chunk of my fortress log, and some art.

10th Slate, 203:
Elves attacked, about 8 of them, three had bows, they snuck in to the fortress (I didn't know they could get past locked doors), and shot all the puppies and a mule. I drafted all 7 of my dwarves. (Having recieved no migrants) The elves obligingly decorated the walls of the entryway with themselves, including one who was literally rended into pulp in a single hit from Monom the Farmer , who was shot in the lower leg after this feat was accomplished.

Munsogrodnul "The Vile Domesciles"; Engraved on the wall is an image of a goblin and an elf by Kikrost "Fortresslashes" Geshudmeng. The goblin is shooting the elf.

Ostashzos, "The Folded Distraction"; Engraved on the wall is an image of a goblin and an elf by Kikrost "Fortresslashes" Geshudmeng. The goblin is striking down the elf.

Traps work against elves.  Use them if you want to.  Otherwise just about anything that stops early goblin ambushes work.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

So they can't dodge traps? I thought they would be able to what with the sneaking and everything...
But, I have lots of spare mechanisms and bonking lots of elves on the head with rocks will amuse me. And using cages and unleashing the DAS, bwahahahaha! :D

The only thing that defeats traps is [trAPAVOID] and possibly having that race's diplomat spoting the traps before the war.  In vanillia, only kobolds have [trAPAVOID].

Upright spikes cannot be defeated by anything if set to a repeater.  And I do mean anything.  Your own civilians, traders, HFS* and pets can be taken out with them.

Is there a good reliable way to get the elves to start a war with you, other than having a war at worldgen? I've been trying for many forts without success, and I' enjoy more things to kill and eat (figuratively speaking). I've modded the goblins to have huge litters, and I have orcs in, but I want more.

Give them liaisons.  Kill said liaison.  That should start a war.  Also kill any diplomats that come to try and end the war.

Apparently the elves were angry about their previous defeat, because this time they sent 20-35 elves on horseback, lead by two swordmasters and an elite bowman, right behind a wave of migrants!!! As if they weren't fast enough already! A few volleys from my 8 marksdwarves and a few of them being dragged down by my swordsdwarves made them flee. Although I'm not sure if they actually routed, or are just hiding....
Casualties: 16 elves of varying professions, 4 dwarves, and a kitten.
This is gonna be a fun war, hopefully I'll have time to set up those traps.
Is it cruel to kill elves with wooden weapon traps, or capture them in wooden cages?  :D

And other than blatting their liason, repeatedly drowning their trade caravans might annoy them... just a little.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Traps should work, proper protection against their hail of arrows (i.e. Fortifications, walls, armor) is important too. You could even go ahead and make little forward outposts to hide your military in so your brave soldiers can charge out and beat those elves up before they get off a shot.

Or you fill the elves with elf bone bolts and proceed to turn the now dead elves into even more elf bone bolts.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Nice.... I shouldn't want to... but I want to....

And in regard to the elf bone bolts plan, I already do that. I use my steel for melee weapons and armour.

Yup they fled for good. Just sent out guys to gather the dead and loot. It's weird that so many well equipped elves backed down to a force just over half their number....
Oh well.  ;D Lets get lootin'!
And building a large amount of fortifications with a ton of cage traps, then I can set up ye olde execution hole!  :D

Quick question, the elves won't be bringing along any building destroyers later on will they?

No, but they like to ride horses and such so free meat, bones and skins. My at war with elves fort got over 100 horse meat with each elven attack(every elf came in mounted).
