One For The Road: The Return To Tombcities
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:40:57 am »

The Dwarven tongue holds many ways to describe wealth, gain, triumph, and celebration.

It has many more ways to speak of tragedy, loss, grief, and struggle.

It has but the one word for failure, and to utter it is the death of honor.

In the year 301, a party of Dwarven settlers were sent to a portentous plot of uncivilized land, prophesied to be of greatest import.  By the arcane Rights of Naming, it was titled Rakustineth, Tombcities, and immediately it earned its name.  But we Dwarves will acknowledge no failure, accept no resistance.  What secrets this wasted spot of land holds we know not.  That we desire it is all that matters.  It has been claimed, and claimed and reclaimed it shall be until no force of this world can remove us.  Indeed, no force can remove us, nor stay us, nor give us pause, for we are Dwarves.

Back in May, Tarn and Zach Adams met a bunch of Dwarf Fortress fans at a bar in Seattle.  There was a laptop, and on it was Dwarf Fortress.  A fort was made, given the random moniker of Tombcities, and it was slaughtered in one season by skeletal hippos.  Much enjoyment was had by all.

Now, with the next installment of Dwarf Fortress nearly complete, and by Tarn's estimate likely due within February within the foreseeable future probably, the time has come for one last Community Fortress.  Yes, I know the board is already clogged with active threads, but there's always room for one more.  Namely, I hope that this one will attract the rather large population that was drawn to this forum by Dwarf Fortress, and still hangs around even though they don't play it much anymore.  You know who you are.  But everyone is absolutely welcome to join in.

As a commemorative fortress, to mark the passing of an era and the welcome of many old friends, I have chosen the auspicious old save of Tombcities as the site of honor, not least because it's the only fortress known of and available that was crafted by the hands Toady One and Three Toe.  Or at least poked at for a few minutes before the hippos got everyone.  So here's one more Community Fort for the road.  This is...

The Return to Tombcities

I don't actually know what I want to do with it yet.  A Rapid-Fire Succession game would be good, where a timer and the honor system is used to complete and hand-off saves as fast as possible, before the new version drops.  Or just a plain old Community fort, where the game is played and happenings are logged.  I can't promise quality, but I can promise feeling.  Whatever the case, you don't have to play it to get on the list or whatever, just post your interest in seeing the Tombcities survive and an available dwarf will be named for you.  Given the hostile territory, I'll have to start the game off with a Reclaim (the last two settlers are on the verge of death in the proper save), and it may need to be Reclaimed several times over.  All the better I say.  So speak up, watch, and enjoy.

Okay, for lack of decisiveness, I added a poll.  I've got two different saves I can proceed with - one where I let everyone die so I can reclaim the site, and the other where two dwarves survive in a bunker and fall in love.  I should point out that they'll be functionally identical after a year or two, it's just a question of flavor.  I'll be back in about a day, so pick for me.

I'd like to participate in this for a turn, or just a dwarf if we're not doing a succession.

You really need to put spoiler tags in the OP, kills my net when I open this thread. Probably my torrents don't help but it's still a lot of needless scrolling.

I want in too. ;D

I have two requests for my dwarf:

First, I want to be either a mason or an engraver.

And second, I want my dwarf to die in the most hideous and contrived way possible. Hippos are a bonus.

I'll in.

And I guess I'll take... uh... some useless noble/ soapmaker.

I'll probably fuck something up when I play, but that's part of the fun, right :P?

Also, can I suggest a new rule: If you build anything attached to a lever or pressure pad, you are not allowed to make a note of what it attaches too or put it in a logical place.
