Are there any reasons not to let subterranean monsters breed?
« on: January 24, 2010, 04:27:15 pm »

This question applies to things like Giant Cave Spiders, not just Lizardmen (etc.).

It bothers me that entire animalman and monster societies die out without breeding.  Antmen societies die especially quickly, as they're all female by default.  Are there any serious drawbacks to giving such creatures the ability to reproduce?

If you're fond of getting zerg rushed by animalpeople as soon as you find the underground river/lake, no. Sure, you could try to wall off the river again, but even now that's quite hard sometimes because your masons get scared. With breeding, they would reproduce like crazy because they live in enclosed spaces and there are by default no enemies of animals in DF.

Giant Olms have building destroyer 2, which lags your game just by existing. Although Cave Crocodiles have it too, and can breed.

Pathfinding is similarly a problem.

Instead of allowing them to breed (I haven't had any luck getting frog and snakemen to breed despite the addition of the relevant tags) you can increase their maxage.

My fire imps breed, makes things more fun on maps with open pipes. Some might say that is reason not to.

you can increase their maxage.
Or remove their age flag entirely and let them live forever like elves and goblins do.

do they breed in the pipe/pool? or do you have them as pets? cuz I always wanted more of a challenge (fending off hundreds of batmen as I try to bridge a chasm)

I usually end up with some captured but not in cages deliberately set up for the imps. I have also had to release some if I end up capturing the only female say.

I think that even in the wild, the ones with EXOTIC will only breed once you get a dungeon master. Oh, how they will breed.
