When an elf has a strange mood, he wanders into the forest and finds a seed. He then lovingly plants it and waters it. When the seed sprouts, the elf rejoices at the wonder of nature. When the sprout becomes a sapling, the elf gives a name to the tree. When the sapling becomes a full-grown tree, a Dwarf cuts it down and makes a barrel out of it.

Certain body parts can't be bruised, except by temperature damage, IIRC. Usually you end up with all the animals dead in their cages if the traders go through a freezing biome, which effectively gives you free meat and bones and leather, 'cause you only have to pay for the cage.
