UI indications about unusable ramps
« on: January 23, 2010, 02:50:03 am »

For a ramp to be usable, the lower, upward portion of the ramp has to be adjacent to  a wall, in order to give the ramp a direction (or so goes my current understanding of DF ramps).  The UI should give you some indications about the matter:

1) Unusable ramps should blink/have a symbol flash over them/etc.

2) For currently usable ramps, designations which would render it unusable should give some sign, similar to the "damp/warm walls" visual warning you get when laying down digging designation.

3) For currently usable ramps, constructions which would render it unusable should give a text warning about it, like it does when you try to place a construction too close to the edge.

For #2 and #3, if the logic for that would be too complicated for multi-tile designations and constructions, it could check for each tile-job as the jobs progress, and then cancel with a warning when it comes to a single tile-job who's completion would render a ramp unusable, similar to the cancel-warning for encountering warm/damp stone.
