I was checking the daily deviations on Deviant Art, and saw this http://k-hos.deviantart.com/art/022-151256511
It got me thinking, that may totally be possible in Dwarf Fortress..
I counted it out and its somewhere between 40-50 layers.

I havent yet done an extreme challenge structure, but I think that this one might be worth my time to do, but am still unsure.
Is anyone seeing any possible reasons that it wouldnt work?
The only one I'm noticing other than height and materials (materials easily solved via magma farming if needed) would be the two pillars of engravings, which I can do by using decorated clear glass. (Can I even do that?..)

Edit: Bloody mispost.
At present my only method of decorating constructions is either to use differently coloured material, or build statues in alcoves. I suppose I might be able to use guardians as decoration; build chains or cages in alcoves and set interesting animals in them, or construct artifact furniture in place of statues.

If you don't mind modding the game, one option would be to use microcline and... let's say, chert or mudstone, as the only layer stones. That way, you could just mine out the various pits into the microcline and engrave it to get the desired effect while the other areas could be actual constructions. This way would give you many, many z-levels of both to work with especially if you could find a microcline mountain somewhere.

If you do decide to do that, you'll probably want to create a new DF folder to use it in since nobody will ever need that much microcline in a normal game.

But you can cast obsidian and engrave that. And as for colors, mod in some new workshops in the new version to take gabbro + dimple dye and turn out microcline, or something along those lines. Or use clear glass which has a nice blue color.

The Forbidden City is on my challenge structure to-do in the new version. Finding a suitable site will be hard, and it'll be an absurdly large embark, but I think it's feasible.

I'm seeing the light blue decoration, and I've gotta say... Microcline.
