Or possess your dwarfs.

>Get outta my heaaaad!<
ehhh. gotta create legendary gold hivebox with turtleshell decoration and felsite rings....

a poison attack that makes them crazy might be fun...
but only if those bees keep near their hives.
As there is no cure for madness, it wouldn't be much fun if half your population went bonkers from a bee.
:) The thought just made me smile, so it might be fun anyhow.

Also, I first read the thread title as "Beerkeeper"...

it should be noted.. that time in dwarf fortress is utterly fubar :P some times my dwarves sleep two or three times a season.. so how long is a day exactly? >.> how many times can that brewer brew in a 'day' that lasts a year?

meh.. :P bees are awesome.. must have bees..

from good to evil:
bumblebee (dawww.. cute wittle bumblebees)
honey bee (happy little honey bees going bout their business)
honeypot ant (they be real! maybe found in soil too, not just on the surface)
sugarspider (kay? also produce low grade silk)
Spartan Bee (decidedly militaristic and agressive, but not bad natured)
Doom Bee (undead bee that produces glowing green honey >.> gives bad thoughts)
Demon Bee (Giant bees which can be tamed and milked for Evil Honey :P)

hows that?

This is a great idea, especially if the possibility exists for your fort to be overtaken by a maddening swarm of bees. Needs a beehive object and a bee swarm of vermin, if you aren't wearing bee gear (armor?) you take (mild) damage from vermin whenever you're near the beehive object, beehive object produces honey which can be eaten or brewed into mead.

Hive is pickupable/moveable but doing so causes it to spread furious bee swarms.

The problem with bees is that they will have to be raised outside. (or at least require the hive be built outside)... though this is a problem I do not want to be removed... it is bad enough that you can raise cows without grazing with no penelties.

It would be an incentive to plant crops outside, as having Bees within X amount of tiles could make said crops Pollinated, improving their quality and growing speed.

hmm...

yeah. 'fertilization' in the other meaning of the word from 'throwing fertilizer on a field'.

Might need to wait for fruit and flowers for that though.
In the meantime, why not generaste a free 1/X fertilizer in warm-seasons for one field in 10 tile range (with free path to hive).

Also untill flowering plants appear;
require # 'herbs' nearby a hive determines production of honey in a season (x/10).

wild hives can be harvested, but bees will be agressive no matter what precautions are taken.
wild hives can be collected with a beehive-basket, functioning similarly to animaltraps.
(I don't think they can be tamed, but maybe abstraction for settling them in the new nest?)

domesticated beehives are built from the captured bee queen.
-these can be harvested destructively (bees will die if they have no honey in winter)
-can also be 'cultivated'; only half the honey is taken.
-if the honey reaches 10/10, bees will start to produce queen bees, if left undisturbed for long enough(*) She will take 5 honey (representing half the population) and leave the hive to start a new one in a spot at least 15 tiles away from the maternal hive.
Free flying hives attack only if provoked.
new hive starts with 1 honey.
(*) maybe: have 10 honey at season start?

The last remaining goblin soldiers dash through the hallways. Most of their numbers were killed by that nightmare of a trap that was outside the main gate.

"This way!" one goblin yells, sensing more dwarves inside. The goblins turn and dash down a hallway, just in time for a group of swordsmen to start chasing them. This whole thing was a terrible idea...

They enter a large room, and a floodgate slams down behind them, blocking the swordsmen from reaching them. A goblin sighs in relief. "we might just survive this..." one of the goblins mutters, but as he speaks, he hears a strange buzzing noise. He turns around to see a single dwarf soldier grinning madly at them. but this is no ordinary soldier... oh no...

oh yes.

For evil biomes (since someone brought up the purple) I can't get past the idea of some kind of bee like insect.. only it craves blood!    :)

Blood Wasps!   Very little honey, but catapult a nest of these things into the middle of a goblin group, and watch them try to run!    :D

Animal caretakers need more to do.
Build a beehive just like an animal trap.  Empty beehives can be set out to catch a swarm (if an appropriate biome, otherwise import), beehives with a swarm can be built to produce honey. Once a year, a full beehive produces a 'collect honey' job for an animal caretaker (if bees have some access to plants - cannot pathfind through doors, but are flying).

Honey is a food that can be eaten raw, cooked, or brewed.

Seems simple enough.

Just thought I had to share those.
