The "I have a virus/spyware thread".
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:58:38 pm »

Since we don't seem to have a virus/spyware removal thread, and most of us eventually get them (be it IRL or online) I figured we might as well have a thread dedicated to it.

So, list the bestest anti-viral/spyware and/or firewall programs out there.

Personally (thanks to Umimans suggestions) I think the Microsoft Security essentials program is pretty good. It has two options for scanning, quick and full (quick scans the usual suspect folders of where virus programs hide) and full... is well a full scan of your PC.

Edit: I'll attempt to list recommended virus/spyware removal programs here.

Also:
Rules are; lively debate about the protection programs/firewalls are allowed I guess, so long as you keep it factual and critical. Also, no trolling pl0x.

Did they even call afterward?

MalwareBytes Anti Malware gets most stuff, and I have SuperAntiSpyware when things get heavy.

Avast!

I had a buddy who used AVG for years. When he switched to Avast, it found hordes of undetected viruses (sp?) on his comp.

I hate Nortons.

Spysweeper is quite good though.

Yeah, screw you Norton. My father had us suffer under you for years and not have you do a damn thing but pester us about how you are slacking off.

So yeah, Spybot and Avast working together to weed out most anything coming my way.

Yeah, I recall Nortons having to release a program designed to uninstall Norton antivirus purely because it was so badly ingrained into your system32 folder that you'd probably destroy your PC by doing it yourself.

My dad's PC had an antivirus program that blocked all internet connection because it wasn't up-to-date. Guess where you had to update it? *facepalm*

I'm running Avast! on my laptop. Love it. It runs constantly in the background, and updates quickly, even on dialup. Found a virus immediately after installing it and scanning my system.
