Alleviating Engraving Repetition
« on: January 20, 2010, 02:23:39 pm »

Currently, engravings tend to repeatedly show a few events and not much more.  If each time a dwarf engraved the event in a given dwarf fortress decreased the probability that event would be engraved again (like by reducing the chances to 1/4 its previous probability), then we'd get a wider variety of engravings.  It wouldn't prevent multiple pictures of the same event, but it would discourage that problem.

It's a similar idea to this thread, but I didn't want to necro it; this is slightly different and should scale a bit better for larger fortresses.

what we'ld get would be something like...
Here is an engraving of the engraving of the engraving of the engraving of the engraving of the engraving of mistoka by the dwarf urist mcdagger.
Urist mc dagger is engraving an engraving of an engraving...
Although that would be funny...

But overall yeah i like it...
dont want my whole fortress engraved with cheese...

Maybe there might be a way to weight 'significant' engravings more than random stuff like cheese? Maybe instead of 'a dwarf', have it be a specific famous dwarf from history or a family member or something?

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

They should also be less likely to engrave images they've engraved before in general; it should be possible, but weighted against based on how many of the same thing they've already done.

You can turn on worldgen history in the init. If an engraving or decoration is meant to be of any specific person or event it will show the details of that person or event in the description.
