Farming Question
« on: January 19, 2010, 04:37:16 pm »

My plump helmet farm has been pumping out the mushrooms for years, but suddenly my 9 planters went on strike or something because they plant the seeds, and then don't harvest them. They spend their time partying and moving 20 withered plump helmets to the refuse pile, completely ignoring the plump helmets waiting to be harvested before they die. I turned off refuse hauling on all my planters, but they STILL refused to haul the darn plump helmets! They're set to Farming, Plant Gathering and food hauling, and some have a few other labors thrown in but nothing that would stop them from planting. Did I hit Plump Helmet critical mass, or what?

Do you have stockpile space for them?  Food stockpiles can get completely full, especially with unrestricted long-term plump helmet farming by skilled farmers.

check you booze levels. If you are running low, they may be taking a lot of breaks

Check your food stockpiles, are they full? Dwarves may not have anywhere to put them

My stockpiles have tons of room (recently expanded them in anticipation of plump-helmet wave).

There is some booze.

It may be a dumb question, but they are food stockpiles, right?

Yes, and they accept plump helmets (else they wouldn't be full of 7000 [really, 7000] of the things).

I sometimes see an item or ten left to rot in the farms but it never becomes a recurring problem.

Maybe your growers are lazy/bored/have other stuff to do/need some magma therapy?

There is a limit on the amount of food not in barrels that can be stored in stock piles, I believe it is 200 (the same limit as stored seeds). So it may be that you have hit this level which would cause the plump helmets to not be harvested. Try making more barrels and brewing wine, if this causes plump helmets to be harvested you are at the limit.

Other than that the only thing I can think of is lack of access to the stockpiles (can they path there, does it use ramps).

Ok thanks, I'll try that. But I'm sure they can path to them.

If you have 7000+ plump helmets in your stockpiles, why do you care if they're rotting in the fields?  It's not like you're going to run out anytime soon.  If your dwarves actually do somehow make a dent in the century's worth of bland fungus you've stockpiled, they'll start to stockpile them again when you drop below the cap.

Haha, I'm an idiot. I forgot to check orders, and it was set to 'dwarves ignore food'. Must have hit the wrong key during the last siege *facepalm*.
