Occupations?
« on: January 19, 2010, 11:55:20 am »

This may come off as a dumb question, but im trying to build a Trade Depot but I require an architect.  I don't have one within my dwarves and I was wondering if theres any way to train dwarves to become a specific occupation?

Secondly, I have a still to brew drink, but as I queue up orders to brew it no one goes to the workshop... do I need a specific occupation for that to?

Any tips?

Thanks guys!

1) Just turn on architecture on one of your dwarves, even if they don't have any experience in that skill, they'll still do the job. The same applies to any skill, they'll still give it a try! (v-p-l-select the 'architecture' labour, it's near the very bottom)

2) Turn on the 'brewing' skill, the same way you'd turn on the architecture skill, above. Also, you need barrels to brew drinks, and if you don't have enough, it will result in a job cancellation, which will notify you at the the bottom of the screen.

Thanks man, HUGE help.  I didn't realize you could turn on skills to dwarves!  That definitely helps.

Also, I have a bunch of peasants.  Can I turn them into anything useful or will they always be peasants no matter what?

The title (i.e. Peasant) is based on what skills a dwarf possesses.  If you turn on a labor, like Brewing, and let the dwarf brew alcohol for a while, the dwarf will earn skill in Brewing.  After enough time, and enough skill, they will become a Brewer instead of a Peasant.

You can also manually override the title (i.e. Peasant) and change it to whatever you want.  For example, if you decide to draft a dozen dwarves as Cooks and enable the Cooking labor on all of them, it might help you to keep things organized in your head by manually overriding all of those dwarves titles to Cook, regardless of their underlying skill levels.

Once they gain a skill, they'll turn into whatever skill name they exp'd in.

E.g. Pesant begins work as a Brewer. Soon his profession will become the same, and his name will go brown, iirc, on the unit list.

It's the very same principle... every dwarf can do any labour, you activate for him via <v-p-l>.
They'll start with no skill (will work slowly and produce low quality goods), but will slowly become better at whatever they're doing. You can train a peasant to be a legendary worker this way, if he does one task for long enough.

I suggest checking out the Dwarf Fortress Wiki at http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/.

Anything : Yes
Useful : Depends ...  ;)

You can activate any occupations as you see fit, - but they will start without skill.
In case of wood burning, mining, tree cutting, it hardly matters, - the tasks will (mostly*) 'just' take longer.
In case of crafting it can become an issue. E.g. If you already have an experienced bone crafter, then it's best if he creates all bone items, as the created items will be of higher value. (Of cause, you can limit your workshops to specific dwarves (I haven't started to do that yet myself.))

After a short time the peasant will gain a new title.

* e.g. I seem to remember that experiences miners creates more stones(?)

Hmm, I just realise the 4(!) other answers while I typed this.  :D

Thanks guys, that makes perfect sense.  I use the wiki a lot but I didn't exactly know what to look up though for this question.

It's amazing how much easier this makes so many things for me now knowing I can make anyone do just about anything, and if for awhile they'll eventually gain the skill.  Helps me out a ton.  I literally try to do as much research on something before I ask it.  Thanks for your help and understanding guys.
