TinyMUSH has a program that compiles it for you...uncompiled stuff for servers isn't that common, although there is usually a pre-compiled package.

I love sandbox MUSHes, never tried a MOO though.

Thanks, I'll try that out too. I need to find one that doesn't actually demand that you know what you're doing in order to run it.

How do you classify beta? Dwarf Fortress itself is only in Alpha.

I have a machine and am formatting it. I will install the server sometime tomorrow. ETA for the pre-prototype is Friday evening. I will spend the weekend configuring the prototype itself.

Wait, what? I don't get how this relates to my post, which is my criticism of your calling this project beta, and pointing out that Dwarf Fortress is in a much more complete phase and yet still alpha.

I was merely saying that projects that start on the B12 forums seem to have a tendency to go by the wayside. For instance, remember that super RTS thingy with the floating islands someone was touting? I haven't heard about that for a long time.

Something a bit like an Orrery might be nice, and it would great if it could be translated into ASCII for the splash screen. That said, go wild.

I get the point, but my critique is simply of your use of the word 'beta'. This game seems to be progressing at an extreme rate (at least, it has been established at an extreme rate), but although it is it would not warrant the use of the word 'beta' which is a near-finished product being tested to find bugs and fine-tune bits of the game.

So... What are we going with? LambdaMOO? A MUSH (Which?)? We should know so that we can start reading up on the scripting language for whatever you are choosing so that we can get right down to the creating of stuff

(I'm really hoping you'd go with a MOO, though... might be a bit harder to use than a MUSH, but its way more flexible than a MUSH too. If you are installing it on a UNIX system, it really requires very basic UNIX functioning knowledge, since UNIX comes with its own "make" command for compiling C...)

This is currently neither a beta nor alpha; it is a prototype or a functional mock-up. Or, it will be once I get it running.

The prototype will use WinMOO, a windows build of LambadaMOO. I will at some point switch to whatever OS and server we end up deciding is best to use. Expect several server wipes.

Also: Somebody make a logo!
