Pushing past the population cap
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:16:15 pm »

I set the population cap to 100, and even though I reached that number years ago, my dwarves still keep pumping out babies. Through reproduction alone, the dwarves have pushed the population to 120 dwarves. how the hell do I stop them!?

Right below the population cap in the INI is the baby/child cap.  Set it to 0:0 instead of 100:1000 to prevent any further childbirths.

magma
agreed.

Magma is -always- the solution.

So before you ask a question, realize you should be asking another question:

"How can I solve this with MAGMA?"

Dont? I mean, if you have an efficient fortress, why are more dwarves a bad thing?

Alternatively: The term "live munitions" could become a really bad pun. Heh heh... baby-pult...

(1) Create a 2x2 room with a 1-tile doorway
(2) Place constructed floors on all four tiles
(3) Start a fortress-wide job that will keep all the adults busy (stone dumping is perfect)
(4) Designate constructions to be removed
(5) Lock the door once one or more children are inside
(6) ...
(7) Profit!

Step 6 can consist of anything from "drown them" to "fill it with magma" to "elephant feeding time", or even "forget to unlock it" -- the end result is your population is reduced and there are fewer useless kids around :D

I imagine one-way ramps would be even better for this, because instead of having a maximum of 4 kids in the room with the deconstruction, you could use a workshop profiled lever to get every last one of the buggers. Also, you don't have to occupy the adults.

In Dwarf Fortress you must think with magma.
1) be an AI
2) Make magma version of those DF water commuters.
3) ? ? ?
4) Fun

One-way ramps aren't exclusively 1 way.  If there is no other path they will walk it in the wrong direction.

You guys aren't thinking DWARVEN enough.

First, create a complex pumping mechanism into a 5x5 room.

Put grates in so it's like

       Bed floor Bed floor Bed
       floor floor grate floor floor
Door Bed grate bed grate bed
Etc etc etc

Put a magma pump in the middle, and a space below the room for old magma, next to a pump to pump it back to the reservoir.

Glass beds recommended. Assign bedrooms - Assign children to bedrooms - Forbid doors once they're in - OPEN FLOODGATE.
